Please forgive me while I brag about my university

The annual Shanghai Rankings for universities was just released for 2014. I am proud to note that, yet again, the University of Toronto was ranked first overall in Canada. And, although not quite as sensational sounding, this year’s Shanghai rankings place Toronto 24th in the world overall (which is not too shabby I suppose, considering the snow, ice, polar bears, and what have you).

But what I am most proud of, and the real reason for this boastful post is that Toronto has once again been ranked second in the world (trailing only Harvard) in research productivity (for the cite, go here first and then sort the right-hand column by ‘PUB’). You’ll see that Toronto scored 80.5 (with Harvard at 100). By comparison, MIT was 61.5, Yale 62.9, Cambridge 66.5. Oxford 72.7, Tokyo 73, and U Michigan at Ann Arbor 77.3, i.e. U Mich finished third behind Toronto and Harvard.

I will also use this opportunity to proclaim for all to hear that my faculty at Toronto - The Faculty of Medicine - just like the University of Toronto overall, was ranked second in the world in terms of research productivity at 74.6 (behind Harvard at 100 but ahead of Johns Hopkins which barely squeaked in with a pitiful 72.4 ;)).

So there!

My cousin works at U of Toronto! Wahoo! That a lot to be proud of.
