Please give me your experience with a muscle strain.

I’m not a spring chicken, but in all my life I’ve never had a muscle strain. I swim 15 laps 3X a week and also do weight training. In spite of this when I was taking down part of my backyard fence and moving those 8 ft. sections I strained a muscle in my hip. It didn’t start hurting for 24 hours so I was taken by surprise and didn’t have any idea what the awful pain was at first. It is now 6 days later and it isn’t any better. I have been swimming twice but no weights. sometimes it’s bearable if I walk perfectly straight, but most times it hurts like hell. I have company coming in 3 weeks and I’m beginning to panic as we have plans and I can’t walk; I limp in pain. I need the benefit of experience and advice for treatment from any of you who have experienced this. How long should it be before this goes away?

Ok, I know this isn’t a very sexy subject, but mostly I need to know how long I can expect this to last. I’m very depressed over this but would feel better if I knew it would be gone soon. any jocks out there?

I don’t think I can help you and definatly not a jock, just somebody who is concerned about fitness. I’m recovering from what I think is a similar myself. Last week or so I felt a soreness(or maybe just pain) in my right back area, and later a similar soreness in my right chest(muscles) area, seemingly working in concert with the pain in my back. Now my chest soreness is mostly gone, but some of the back soreness is back. It was pretty bad for a day or so whenever I used those muscles(or when I sneezed), but it’s quite tolerable now and hopefully will be gone by monday at this rate.

I don’t know what caused it, since I wasn’t exercising any more or less then usual, nor doing anything that could have caused it. Basically, just tried to get plenty of sleep every night to let it heal.

I’m sorry it doesn’t help. I wish I could help you. I kept my normal workout routine(Jogging, Squarts, Weight training(which was the worst of it) with no changes, but I realize that probably isn’t an option in your case. I hope it gets better and my best wishes to you that it does soon. Hopefully somebody will be able to help you soon enough.
