Please help identify this early to mid 90's movie

I remember so little about this film, but please bare with me here.

The plot revolves around two kids, one boy who has some kind of illness, possibly cancer, and an older boy who hangs out with him and protects him from bullys.

In the first half of the movie, a group of older bullies start harassing the smaller kid about the illness that he has. The older friend throws a rock at the main bully and it hits him right in the head. At least that’s what I think happens. Then the two kids get away on a bicycle, the younger kid riding on the handlebars, and they go down a very steep road.

I know the two kids floated in a creek near there homes in an inner tube. That’s a completely random thing, but it sticks out quite a bit in my mind.

The sick child’s mother is single.

There is also one part where the mother, her son, and his friend eat ice cream in their kitchen.

At one point, the older kid persuades the boy to use his allowance to buy candy, since he doesn’t eat a lot of it because of his illness. When they’re at the store, the little boy doesn’t know which ones to get, so the older tells him it’s okay to sample them out, hehe.

Of course, the kid does get sick then. I can’t recall if the boy has to go to the hospital for it or not.

Sadly, at the end of the film, the one boy dies. Then, after this, the mother protects the older child from his own mother, because she yells at him and appears to be very abusive.

I would have searched for this myself, but even with google, it’s difficult. Hopefully someone here can help me :).

This sounds like The Mighty, a movie I’ve never actually seen except for previews. If I remember right, the boys are played by Kieran Culkin and Elden Henson, and the moms are Gillian Anderson and Sharon Stone.

Wow, you really jarred something loose there Tiger. (Bonus points to whomever guess what movie that line is from).

I think you are thinking of The Cure. A movie I had completely forgotten about until you mentioned it. I actually saw it in the thater even.

“Oh, my little Roy-toy…what is it about sex that makes me have to take a crap?”

Bonus points for me! The movie is…

KingPin!

As to the OP, I have no clue.

Is it the one that was based on a Stephen King story, “A Prayer for Owen Meany”? I forget what the actual release title was.

Simon Birch?

The novel was by John Irving.

Sounds like The Mighty to me.

Thanks everyone

Is The Mighty based upon Freak The Mighty? I’m fairly certain it’s The Cure, I’ll have to check it out or something.

The Mighty (which I own on DVD) is based on “Freak The Mighty”. You’d know if it was the right film (it certainly sounds a lot like it) if you also recall Sharon Stone, Kieran Culkin, Harry Dean Stanton, Gillian Anderson, and Sting’s excellent title song. Also, lots of symbolic imagery of Knights on horses.

If you don’t remember those, then it may be The Cure which I haven’t seen.

Don’t know about the movie but the bonus is actually from…

Star Wars-after Han Solo blasts the comm in the detention area

OOPS, I mean before.
