my vote: Neutrogena oil-free moisture SPF 15 facial moisturizer-very light, absorbs well
First piss of the morning. Washcloth. Face. Repeat.
I use Bio-Oil. It leaves the skin feeling moisturised, yet is light and leaves no residue. Feel wonderful on the skin.
I was using some chichi, lovely, $35/thimble full moisturizer my daughter gave me. When I ran out she recommended this stuff, which costs about $5 a vat. No lie, except for the lack of fragrance, I honestly can’t tell the difference between the two.
Great stuff!
If you decide to try Olay Complete, I strongly recommend going with the sensitive skin version, the one that has “classic gentle formula” printed in the corner. I used their combination/oily formulation for at least ten years and loved it, but a few years ago they changed their formula and the lotion was greasy and had a terribly strong sunscreen smell. Even after showering, I could still smell the lotion on my face. I thought I’d have to find a different brand until I learned that they’d changed their sensitive skin lotion back to the old formula, so that’s what I use now.
You could also try jojoba oil. I like the Desert Essence brand. It’s easily absorbed and actually makes my oily skin less oily.
Oil of Olay as well, I recommend. I use something else (SK II) which is out of your price range, but when that was out of my price range, Oil of Olay it was and it did fine. Plus, I (and my skin) was younger then.
I can’t believe I’ve become the sort of woman who uses a day cream and a night cream, but apparently that’s reality now. I have oily skin that’s dry enough to flake all over the place, which makes* no sense *to me.
I use Aveeno Positively Radiant day moisturizer, because it’s got SPF and it’s quickly absorbed and has a very light scent. While it’s very good at keeping my skin protected from the sun, I don’t find it took care of the dry patches well enough, so I added a night cream. After trying several, I settled on Neutrogena Naturals “multi-vitamin nourishing night cream”. I don’t’ give a crap about the vitamins, but it’s not greasy, smells pretty, and has cured my flaky forehead and eyelids.
That sounds more like seborrheic dermatitis than dry skin. Oily plus flaky.
Sweet holy zombie Jesus. I loved the vat of St. Ives collagen/elastin facial moisturizer I used to use, and I canNOT find it anymore on any shelves! I thought they quite making it back when they re-did all their labels.
Caveat: don’t think too hard about where the collagen and elastin come from. It’s like Jell-O. Just .. don’t think about it.
Glad to be of service, purplehorseshoe.
Oh and psssssssssst! …Walmart.
You can also buy that St. Ives moisturizer through Amazon or Drugstore.com if you can’t find it in a store.
You will probably have a hard time believing this, but Aldi’s “Lacura” line of skin cream is supposed to be about the best thing going. I have two friends who swear by this stuff, and will go to great lengths to get some, visiting Aldi stores when they travel, to stock up. One of them ran into a man (here in Missouri) who was hired by a woman in CA, to travel the country and gather up all he could find for her. I have yet to find it in stock in my 2 local stores. Apparently, the secret’s out. The best part, is that it costs about 4 bucks!
Thanks for the recommendations, everybody! My Clinique package arrived today, and I’m very happy with it. It’s a very lightweight moisturizer, and the small patches of dryness on my cheeks and forehead disappeared after the first use. My skin still feels very soft 4 hours later, but not heavy or oily at all. Plus, the sample of Happy they sent smells *really *good. Good enough that I might consider wearing it full time. Yay!
Kinda funny you bring this up, but I was sniffing shampoos at my mom’s house and one of them smelled REALLY good. Like, “the kind that only salons are able to purchase” good. I looked on the label and saw it was manufactured by Aldi!
So I went and bought some at my Aldi and what do you know? It’s freaking awesome salon-style shampoo that smells 100% professional and works like a charm, for $3 a bottle. I think it’s called Lume (with an accent over the e, I think). I say it like “loo-MAY.” And it’s cheap enough that I can use it as a body wash without feeling guilty. ![]()
Thanks for posting this. I’m obsessed with Aldi right now and was eyeballing the body/face care. I’m going to do some googling about it and maybe buy some to try.
For everyone here, especially those with flakey yet oily skin, moisturizers will work so much better if you exfoliate first. That is, get the dry, flakey patchy dead skin cells off so that your chose moisturizer contacts fresh new skin. You can use a washcloth, scrubbing beads, etc. Just make sure to use a light touch when exfoliating instead of scrubbing like you were cleaning your bathroom floor. I personally use philosopy’s microexfoliating wash because of the microbeads. Then I use whatever moisturizer is available. Hope this helps.
I also use Aveeno Positively Radiant day moisturizer because of the SPF (I live in South Florida and am an arctic flower-- I don’t want skin cancer, thanks!), but ended up using an evening moisturizer for when I wash off my makeup after I get home from work. I’m currently using Pond’s Clarant B3, which works really well for me. I have combination skin that used to be very oily in most places to being a little oily in some and a little dry in others with hormonal acne flare-ups instead of regular acne. It’s good stuff and really makes my skin feel nice without getting over-moisturized.
