Upon close examination, I’ve noticed little patches of dry skin all over my face. I had combination/oily skin as a teenager, but nowadays it tends to be dry all over. I don’t generally get pimples, though, fortunately. I’ve never used a face cream before, and I don’t wear makeup. I wash my face once a day, try to never touch it with my hands, and… well, that’s the extent of my daily regimen.
I’d like a face cream that’s affordable (under $20), will last for longer than a couple weeks, and has NO residue after it dries. I can’t stand even a little bit of that gooey post-lotion sensation. Anything sold at a big-box store, or purchasable online through Amazon, would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance
I use Beautypediato suss out the best products. I’m guessing you’d look for a moisturizer for oily skin to avoid residue.
I know you didn’t ask, but you might want to consider a daily moisturizer with sunscreen. As someone who just had a suspicious spot frozen off my nose (with dubious success, it seems), sunscreen is near and dear to my heart as a safety measure, not just for fighting wrinkles.
Thank you for the link, I will check that out. It seems like you’re saying a moisturizer for oily skin will leave behind a more palatable residue, but I’m wondering whether it will moisturize dry skin adequately at the same time. And, although I’m not opposed to sunscreen, I’m not using that as a criterion. I spend very little time in the sunlight, and skin issues/skin cancer do not run in my family. I don’t feel it’s a necessity. I’m more concerned about the face-feel after using a cream. I would like for it to feel nice and soft and moisture-infused, but natural and touchable. If it feels sticky or slippery or oily, I’m going to stop using it.
I don’t know if you’d consider this as it does take about 10 minutes to soak in, so may fail your “residue” test, but I use coconut oil–from the grocery store aisle. A large jar of it lasts me months, and it does wonders for my skin.
If you have time you might stop by your nearest cosmetics counter and try Clinque Dramatically Different Moisturizer. It comes in either lotion or gel, and once you figure out which one you like(thus the tester trip) it can be ordered online. Not cheap but not too spendy and a jar lasts plenty long enough.
I’ve started using the Burt’s Bees Sensitive Facial Cleanser and Sensitive Night Cream in combination every night, and it has really evened out my skin from combination to looking good.
It fits the cost part, but now that I’m writing this I realize that I can’t even recall if it leaves a residue. I’m going to send this in the hope that I’ll remember to pay attention tonight!
You should probably look something that is non-comedogenic. When I need it, I use a daily facial moisturizer from Cetaphil that is non-comdogenic and has a SPF of 50 (I think).
I might consider coconut oil as part of an occasional facial mask (I’ve used it on my hair before). Not as a daily thing, though. I’ve actually used Cetaphil before and I don’t like it at all. I prefer scented products, and Cetaphil soap has a texture very close to that of fresh semen. Gross.
After the two recommendations for Oil of Olay Complete, I took a look at their website and answered some questions to get a product recommendation. They recommended the Complete Ageless Skin Renewing UV Lotion. I was set to give that a whirl, but… I went ahead and looked at the Clinique site, even though I figured it’d be too expensive. I went through their website and got another product recommendation. And then, when I compared their per-ounce prices, Clinique was barely more expensive per-ounce than Oil of Olay.
I went ahead and put in an order for the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion (for skin types 1-super dry or 2-dry combination). It was $30 after tax and shipping… so, a little more than I wanted to spend, but it should last a very long time. I’m also getting a mini sample of their “Happy” fragance… yay! Thanks again, Doper ladies (and/or gents!)
I hope you like the Clinique. I use one of their night creams and love it with an abiding passion. Another of their daytime moisturizers gave me cystic acne. Oh well.
My standard moisturizer for everything for years has been Lubriderm. Love it. Comes in different formulas, and because I have a thing about scented products I usually pick the unscented, but even the scented ones aren’t too overwhelming.
Goes on light and absorbs quickly. If my skin is feeling super dry, I may use a bit more, but usually just put it on after I shower or wash my face in the morning.
I just found out that my fiance, who struggles with his skin and finally saw a dermatologist a few weeks ago, has been washing his face with SOAP. He doesn’t understand my facepalm.
In that it’s slippery and wet? I’m not really sure how Cetaphil is any more or less like semen than any other facial cleanser.
One tip I’d mention is that scented products may not be the best thing if you have skin issues. Fragrance may be pleasant but it can be irritating or overly drying, and if you’ve already got dryness issues, you may want to stay away.
I’ve had good luck with Clinique’s three step (cleanser, toner, moisturizer). My skin tends to be oily but they’ve got it for all skin types.
I’m a guy. About a year ago I noticed that if I scratched my face, little bits of it would flake off and flutter down onto my desk at work. After a while I realized I needed to moisturize, something my wife has done every day I’ve known her.
I changed soaps, had dermatologists prescribe various lotions, potions and creams, taken pills, etc, all with little or no lasting results. Finally my wife told me to try her face cream, Olay Complete. It’s the only one that has worked. I use it at night, and occasionally again in the morning if I still look flakey after my shower.
I’ve mentioned this before in other threads, but Nivea cream made in Germany is awesome (and way different than the US version). Smallflower is the only legit source online I’ve found and here’s a link. (That link goes to the HUGE tub, you can get away with a smaller one).
Of all the moisturizers I’ve tried, that one is my favorite, plus you can use it all over your body AND it’s cheap. I put it on before bed, but my face definitely looks more healthy and nice when I use this stuff frequently.
I agree with Ike Witt, you definitely need to find a non-comedogenic lotion that won’t clog your pores if you tend to have oily skin on your face. I do some work with the Eucerin team and would recommend Eucerin’s Daily Protection Moisturizing Face Lotion SPF 30. I use it myself since it’s one of the most light-weight lotions I’ve found. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a sticky residue behind. If you’re interested, there’s a free sample offer going on right now on the EucerinUS Facebook page so you can try it out first without purchasing.
