Please help me get rid of these Mardi Gras beads!

So I’m cleaning out my room in anticipation of driving back to Michigan with whatever can fit in my car in a couple months… and I just realized that all the beads I caught during Mardi Gras aren’t doing much besides sitting in my cabinet and taking up space.

Would any of you guys like some? I’ve already picked the batch clean of green and white beads that I plan to distribute/sell at my MSU tailgate in the fall, but if you want any other colors, I have every one you could think of (and if you ask me reeeal nicely, I could probably part with some of the green or white ones). I could combine colors for your alma mater or your kids’s school colors, or just send you a mixture. I have to say, they look dazzling hanging from a rearview mirror, and you can also take them apart to make Christmas tree garlands and other crafts. Depending on how many you want, I may have to ask you to reimburse me a few dollars for shipping, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

So ask away!

Do we have to show you our boobs?

Um…I think we need to see some boobs…first…

…from a female.
Let’s just clear this up first.

Hey, tsarina , how about you give a fellow Michigander those beads…then you can earn back the green and white ones?

crossing his fingres and tose, hoping it’ll work

You could geve them to your local community center or Boys and Girls Club. The kids would get a kick out of them.

Out of curiosity, why would you keep the green and white ones?

Green and white are Michigan State’s team colors, I’m guessing.

Googled to confirm

Me! I’d love some – however many you’d be willing to part with. (Absolutely I will be happy to reimburse you for postage/shipping.)

You see, our Women’s Guild makes craft items to sell, all proceeds going to support various World Relief missions. (The last few years we mainly do the one that buys animal stock for regions that have gone through horrendous droughts.)
Beads are used in many of our crafts already, and if we had more, I’m sure we’d branch out even further.

Personally, my favorite colors are yellow & blue, and after that orange and or gray/black, but since the items will be sold to the general public, any colors will be gratefully accepted.

Ooh…saying your favorite colors are yellow and blue aren’t gonna get you beads any faster.

yellow and blue being the colors of the University of Michigan

You do know that Mardi Gras “beads” aren’t really beads, right? They’re spheres of plastic formed on a string, you can’t take them apart to use individually. I mean, I can think of a bunch of craft things to do with them, but not as beads, more as trim.

Ah. No, I didn’t know that. Hmmm. Well, yes, it wouldn’t work for some of our existing crafts, but for others it would do. Like ornamental lampshades. And I bet we could come up with others – we’ve got some very clever and artistic women in the group. (Not me, I mostly do scut stuff, like packaging and manning the sales table.)

Cross my heart and hope to die, I have NEVER rooted for ANY University of Michigan team.

Please, I would love some! I’ve never been able to go to any kind of Mardi Gras festival. Should I e-mail you?

Hey! I went there for a semester, buster.

Oooh! Please, please! WhyBaby would like a few strands for her [del]physical therapy[/del] play time! Her therapist showed her a bunch this week and she loved them, but I don’t know where to get some for home. They’re actually safer than real beads because they don’t come off the sting and present a choking hazard.

My email’s in my profile if I’m lucky enough to be chosen. I’d be happy to pay for shipping. Any color’s fine.

I am not asking for beads. I have a big bagful in my closet, collected during my two-year New Orleans stint. (And no, I didn’t flash for them. What they don’t tell you is that you don’t have to, especially since at most of the parades you’re risking getting arrested if you do!) And WHY did I not think of making garlands out of some of them for our Christmast tree?

I hope I remember that one next December, because that is one great idea.

My husband got several necklaces for flashing at Mardi Gras. Apparently, women like to throw beads for guys to flash, as well as the other way around. I wasn’t with him on that trip (he has relatives in NO), but his brothers and cousins didn’t let him drop his underpants for beads. I suppose I should be grateful for small favors.

When I was living in West Hollywood, every year they had an annual Mardi Gras festival on Santa Monica Blvd. and all of the bars gave away beads.

Like you, I found a box full of them I had saved over the years (packrat that I am) and when it came time to move to Las Vegas, we had a garage sale. I was going to throw the beads away, but thought maybe someone might want to buy them…who knows?

We barely put stuff out for the garage sale and bam - the box with the Mardi Gras beads was gather a huge crowd. Mostly elderly ladies were going crazy for them and offering up to a dollar each! I think I made about $50 on those crappy beads in that box.

You are in deep shit. The University of Michigan is at Ann Arbor and its colors are Maize and Blue. This is Michigan State at East Lansing.

Fie, shame, and stuff like that there.

Thanks for the replies! I’ll send some to everyone who asked. I’ve got finals starting this week, but I’ll try to squeeze in some time to go to the post office.
