Please help test my son's movie site for school

As a school project, my son has created a social networking site based entirely around movie ratings and reviews. He needs to do some testing, which requires a bunch of people sign on and rate some movies.

If you have a few spare moments, he and I would both greatly appreciate it if you’d sign on to http://www.cinecollaboration.com. Just create an account, rate a few movies, do a review if you feel like it, and give me some comments on the site. I think his concept of compatibility ratings with other site members is unique.

If you want to review a movie that’s not on the site, just post the movie name here. He’s trying to keep all the movies post-2004.

Thanks much.

DISCLAIMER: The site is not in any way commercial, and nothing you do will be in any way cheating: you’re just giving him some test data. And I … um … checked this with a mod before posting

Done. I am afraid I probably wasn’t much help, but I rated what I knew…

One thing though, I am not sure if he’s looking for feedback but when I tried to rate one movie it said I already had…that might have been operator error or my cat walking on the keyboard (if so then I accidentally gave Sherlock Holmes only half a star when I meant to give it more ). Otherwise it looks like a pretty solid site to me.

I noticed with changing your password, there isn’t a second box to match. That could be a PITA that he may want to fix. (Not sure how much of a focus the programming/coding is, so it might barely be relevant.

Also, add the new Star Trek! I’m sure he’ll get plenty of Doper reviews for that.

ETA: Overall, though, a pretty decent site. What exactly did he make it for?

Possible issue- on movies where I’m the first person to rate, the graphic shows half a star/orb less than what I gave it on the movie’s page. Forex, Where the Wild Things Are got a 4.5, but only 4 orbs were colored. Likewise with Twilight getting a 1, but only displaying a 1/2. (It was a pretty bad movie, but Edward’s sister is hot and apparently the dudes are easy on the eyes as well. )

On the giant list, however, they have the correct display (and also indicate only one person rated it, correctly, I assume).

Cool! Thanks, folks. My son is the one called “Aroinak” on that site, by the way.

He’s trying to duplicate that problem.

He’s working on that one now.

He added it.

It’s a BPA (Business Professionals of America) project.

Fixed.

He’s probably not going to get an “edit rating” function in there in time, but he can manually change that. What did you mean to rate Sherlock?

Okay - he has that in there now.

I was going to give it 3. Thanks.

I don’t care for the orange font. It’s not pleasant to look at for more than 30 seconds.

My daughter was in that! Went to State but, post high school, needs to be reminded that her speciality, HR, is a real department where her skills would be valued and that Burger King only exists for her to save up money to buy a car while living under M&D’s roof.

See what you think now. He’s attached to the orange, but he changed it to a lighter (yellower) shade - and lightened up the blue on the links, too.

I registered using my ID here. It changed it to don’t ask in the email with my password but won’t allow me to log on with it or register again with the same email address.

Cool! My son won first in the district, and we’re in the “edit window” where he can make changes and improvements before the state competition. He has to have all tweaking done by Monday, and figures having extra participants will help find problems. More people involved will also mean more data for the judges to look at.

Thanks for helping him out, everyone!

 He never tested anything with quotes or apostrophes in the username!

He changed it to “dont ask” (but didn’t change the password).

Still doesn’t like it. Can he change it to dontask perhaps?

I’m sending you a PM …

Done. Account created and movies rated.

Visually…well, it’s a huge turn-off. He may be “attached” to the color scheme, but if his users don’t want to look at his site…

I don’t know that BPA is, but if it has anything to do with training future business people, there are major lessons to be learned here.

He should look at other top sites and take a cue from them. Black on white text is the norm because it’s the easiest to read. The font is too large and looks clumsy where bolded. That royal blue is awful. I like the dark red that he uses in some titles, and there’s no reason he couldn’t use orange as an accent. That could look kind of cool if done right.

The good news is that the layout was good, and it was VERY easy to figure out how to use the site.

I enjoyed the review of District 9 and agree with his assessment. I would recommend he take out or modify this sentence, "It does, however, use the central theme used throughout the high majority of sci-fi films; Aliens. " Really? Cite? It would be easy enough to change it to something like “the central theme of so many sci-fi films…”

I also enjoyed the review of Star Trek, and I actually LOLed at the following:

Besides being funny, that quote definitely expressed the feeling you get when you see a movie that you just love so much that you struggle to say anything coherent about it.

His reviews made me want to read more of his reviews, and also showed me that his opinions and conclusions are worth reading, even if I may not ultimately agree.

As far as the movies included on the site–as a parent, I end up watching a lot of kid movies. I’d love to see more recent kid movies on the list.

I wanted to sign up and help- the concept is cool and it’s nice to be helpful- but colored-text-on-black background is really hard for me to look at for any amount of time unless I don’t have my glasses on or contacts in. The real problem are the headers and links- that glowy effect is kinda painful. It’s possible some of that is because of the screen I’m using.

As she is my daughter she went in with no preparation at all, assuming her native awesomeness would make up for it. Which it did, for the most part, but the others on her team were not as naturally awesome.

Losers.

He thinks he can do that change tomorrow without impacting his ability to have the site ready Monday. Since it seems like such an important issue, I suggested he give it a shot.

Glad to hear that. I think it’s one of the key factors to the judges.

He also writes movie reviews for my newspaper, if you’d like to see some more of his work.

Good suggestion!
