Please Name Hits By Eric Johnson, solo guitarist

I recall in the early 1990s, there was a jamming, solo rock guitarist by the name of Eric Johnson. But, since all his works (that got airplay to my knowledge) were all instrumental, I never got to know their titles.

So, please name what Eric Johnson hit songs might have gotten the airplay in the 1990s?

Cliffs of Dover

“Cliffs of Dover” is the only one I can recall hearing on the radio.

Zap from the album Tones.

Cliffs of Dover and Desert Rose from Ah Via Musicom.

He also had a great appearance on Austin City Limits around that time. Youtube has clips from that I believe.

He had three instrumentals from Ah Via Musicom which got airplay in my area. They were “Cliffs of Dover”, “Righteous”, and “Trademark”. Good album, by the way. I was compelled to buy it on the strength of these tunes.

Trademark got a lot of radio play, great tune. I also remember hearing SRV which was a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughn.

If you’re looking for a recent recording he appears on Eric Clapton’s DVD 2004 Crossroads Guitar Festival. He performs Desert Rose.

[Hijack] Clapton’s CGF DVD’s and soundtrack are worth every penny and there is a 2007 version coming out in a few weeks that has me salivating. The 2004 DVD set had some nice Clapton sets but was really a showcase for accomplished guitarists from World music to Country, Blues and Hard Rock. The closing performance by ZZ top is the perfect icing on the cake[/Hijack]

“Cliffs of Dover” was really the only one I could think of.

I did seem him perform in San Jose in '91 or '92 at Spartan stadium. He was second on a bill of 4: Extreme, Eric Johnson, Steve Miller Band, ZZ Top. Absolutely awesome concert.

I saw him open for Rush on their ‘Throw the Bones’ tour, had to be '91 or '92 I think. He played just amazingly but never really looked up at the audience. It was Ah Via Musicom and occasionally I’ll still hear those wicked opening fast arpeggios in a commercial or something. Nice to know he’s still performing!

Nitpick: That’s “Roll the Bones.”

And “Cliffs of Dover” is the only Eric Johnson song I’ve ever heard. If the OP is looking for a specific song, that’s most likely the one.

Here is a link to him performing Cliffs of Dover on Austin City Limits many years ago. If it doesn’t sound familiar to you it’s because he adds about 2 minutes of intro. Just wait for it.

This should be a link to him discussing electric guitars. Fender has a EJ sig model that is considered a big deal to guitar players, but has only been available with a maple fingerboard. The discusses a number of guitars but spends a lot of time discussing the new-for-'08 EJ Sig with a RW fingerboard…pretty cool looking…
