Maybe someone out there is a fan of Eric Johnson, I think his name is. I believe he had hits on rock stations in the 1990’s. Maybe even in the late 1980’s? What were the titles of his bigger hits - which probably brought his name to my attention?
The first hit that you may have heard was Zap on the album Tones. Also popular on that album was Emerald Eyes. On the Ah Via Musicom album, the big hits were Cliffs Of Dover which has been mentioned and Trademark, but the whole album is excellent. The Venus Isle album only seemed to muster one song that got any real air play, Lonely In The Night, but that album, too is chocked full of excellent guitar solos. Eric was also one of the featured guitarist on the G3 Live album (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson).
I doubt that you’ve heard anything off of the Alien Love Child / Live & Beyond album released last year, but Eric is his usual phenomenal self…
I played a few times at a dive called Rio’s in San Diego about twelve years ago. Total crap-hole of a place, but my band was equally crappy and that was the only place we could book.
About that time, a gal I knew told me there was this guitar player I had to see called Eric Johnson. Well, he was playing at Rio’s and I figured if that was the best he could do he probably wasn’t all that. Six months later, Ah Via Musicom came out and it was one of my favorite albums. I always regretted not making that show.
Oh, this is a total hijack, but one Rio’s memory: my band was a Grunge (we called it Punk) gig called Sons of Cain. Once they labeled us Sons of King and put out ads saying we were a reggae outfit. For whatever reason quite a crowd showed up looking for reggae and we were pretty damn far from delivering. That was quite a stressful evening.
Wow, I had the same experience as Bill H. I was in this blues band, see, and we somehow got booked in this divey redneck bar and everybody threw beer bottles at us. (Good thing we were behind chicken wire!) The only reason we made it out alive was that we played “Rawhide” for the rest of our set!
