I’m thinking of picking up a few seasons of the Simpsons. Which are the best seasons overall?
Since we’re on the topic, which seasons must be avoided at all costs?
As far as the DVDs go, the first and seconds seasons are pretty lousy, IMO. The first being the worst of the two. They have the 3rd season out now, right? That was when the show started to hit its stride, and the writing and animation was more or less like it is now.
C’mon, you guys, help me out! There are three-page-long threads on the best/worst Simpsons’ joke. Somebody must have opinions on the best/worst season!
I know that there are only a few seasons already out on DVD. But more are on the way and I have a chance to pick up new seasons fairly cheaply as they’re released. So feel free to rank 'em all, even if they’re not out on DVD yet.
Seasons 3-8 are the best years, in most peoples opinions. You really can’t go wrong with any of those.
Seasons 4,5, and 6 are the best.

My sister picked up Season 3. It’s really remarkable how much better those episodes are to todays. The animation isn’t as sharp, or the voices as well done but the storywriting is top notch.
Homer isn’t just a one trick-pony reglegated to inane comments. The jokes are fresh and witty, not like season 9 and on which require “say it-say the opposite” type jokes and 3 second sight gags.
Pick up season 3 (out now) and 4 through 8 whenever they roll out (Amazon says they don’t know the expected release date for 4).
