I am just starting out and would like to try some basic mediation. Not for any particular reason, just general well being and learning methods to enhance my calm. I have very little experience and less knowledge. So far I have tried a few Android apps, but they are either rough guides (UCLA meditation) or they offer a few classes for free until the pay wall hits (Serenity). I don’t mind paying for a service I value but I am way too new at this to sign up paying monthly for anything.
I would rather do this in the car on my Android, but I have a PC and iPad at home in case you have an app that is good for them and is free.
Hell, I would even consider a one time pay low cost app.
I am sure there are loads at the library. But it’s a bit like learning a language, this is something I think will be much easier (if even possible only) with a human voice.
But sure, I can learn something from other sources, any good recs for basic meditation that standout I’ll also check out.
YouTube might be an option. There are a number of channels dedicated to mindfulness and meditation.
I’m not sure how useful doing it in your car would be (assuming you mean while driving). Staying focused on driving seems to be the opposite of what you want to achieve while meditating.
I have two young teens. My car parked in an abandoned lot with the windows rolled up is the only peace and quiet I can find. And even then every car door slam or whatever I can feel people staring at me even through closed eye lids so I have to fight to find some god damn serenity.
You may find Dean Sluyter’s take on meditation suits you. He eschews most of the dogma associated with meditation practice. He has written several very readable books and teaches meditation in prisons. Here are a couple of guided meditations from one of his books:
