Please recommend a great recent real-time strategy game

I have Supreme Commander 2 and I love it, but I’ve been playing it for a while now (on and off since it came out in 2010). I assume there must be newer games that are also awesome, but it’s possible that the genre is just moribund.

So, any great RTS games in the last 3 or 4 years? I have this new computer that I built, so I’m not afraid of modern games anymore.

My preference is to only have to worry about one resource if possible, maybe two (like the mass extractors and energy miners in SC2).

It’s weird to me how game genres come and go – you’d think there’d be a new generation of gamers every few years who would like RTS, music games, rhythm games, etc., but FPS and their close cousins seem to be the only ones that are consistently popular.

It’s not a classic RTS, but I’ve been having a lot of fun with Total War: Warhammer II recently. The campaign map mechanics aren’t as developed as some of the historical Total War games, but it makes up for it with a lot more interesting RTS battles and unity variety.

Second TW:WII.

But really, nothing has come out that competes with Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance.

I would third Warhammer 2, and also suggest Total War: Three Kingdoms if you’re looking for a game that’s a little more traditional than Warhammer but has some very interesting diplomacy mechanics too.

To edge away from RTS in a slightly different direction, Stellaris is a fantastic game for Strategy fans who appreciate some depth but don’t want to dive off the deep end with Europa Universalis or Hearts of Iron.

The Outer Worlds and SOMA. You dont kill anything in SOMA but otherwise itsa great RTS atmospheric game,

Maybe I’ll just pick up that other Supreme Commander game. The TW games seem to be turned based.

madsircool, SOMA seems to be a first-person game not a RTS game. Did I find the wrong thing?

The strategic map in TW is turn based, but the actual battles are real time. That means you can build bases, recruit your armies and move then around the map at your leisure, but once you engage the enemy, you zoom in to a pure RTS.

It is first person but with a twist. You dont attack or kill anything. You are on a spaceship and you must transverse it alive and learn what happened. Its beautiful, suspenseful and fun.

Alessan, thanks! I’ll give it a try.

madsircool, it’s not really what I’m looking for right now, but maybe I’ll give it a spin if I see it on sale.

Note that* Total War: Warhammer* 1 and 2 take place in the same world - 1 in the east and south and 2 in the west - and if you have both games, you can play a campaign covering the entire world.

I think you’re confusing SOMA with another game. (STASIS, maybe?)

SOMA mostly takes place in an underwater research facility.

Neither STASIS nor SOMA have really anything in common with RTS. SOMA is first person, STASIS, while 3rd person, doesn’t have any “strategy” components.

Both are best described as adventure/puzzle games.
