I’m having real difficulty with this, with being fobbed off right at the receptionist stage till fear of being aided only to part with my money.
Did you have good experiences? How did you do it?
This is for civil litigation, btw.

I’m not quite sure what has happened to you - please could you explain your experience again?
I’ve used the same firm of solicitors for over 20 years and found them most satisfactory. They have:
I found the firm by asking colleagues at work who they would recommend.
Could you have another attempt at your first sentence? I think you’ve probably missed some words or something and I’m not sure what you are saying.
I’m not sure any of us can help you without more information.
Have you tried asking on your local group on Facebook for recommendations? Citizens Advice? The Law Society?
That first sentence did come out a mess, sorry. I meant to say that I’m in a pickle with people more powerful than me, I need legal backing, and when I try to call the law firms I don’t get pass the receptionist. They say “we’re full, sorry” or “we’re not taking any new cases, sorry” or “give us your details and we’ll call you back” even though their websites sound very friendly and welcoming.
@glee: yes but that is more akin to admin work, no risk, guaranteed dosh. Litigation is different.
@SanVito: those firms are the recommendations
For you to not even get an initial consultation or call back suggests to me that what you are seeking is help that, from the outset, rings alarm bells.
Do you have the funds to litigate, or are you hoping to find a firm that will conduct the litigation on some sort of speculative basis? If the latter, I suspect that the firms are forming an immediate view that your case does not sound like the sort of sure fire winner on which law firms will bet.
Well, for sure. If I were asking for the kind of services glee mentioned I bet it would be different, so yes some prejudice is taking place. Hence me starting this thread.
If you tell us what your case is about, perhaps you’ll get some helpful feedback and advice.
Without knowing that, there’s not much that anyone can say.
Prejudice? I didn’t mention prejudice.
You ‘bet’ it would be different? So you’ve never hired anyone for the range of services I mentioned.
Have you ever hired a solicitor for anything ever?
Why the hostility? Most of the services you mention were transactional which is very different to litigation.
Although I’m not sure what a PPI is.
“Payment Protection Insurance”: bundled in with many mortgages and other loans, at additional expense to the borrower, even though many didn’t need it, being covered by existing insurance. Big scandal, finally resolved by the providers setting up a refund scheme (now closed, which may be a factor in the OP’s situation).
