Please share your experiences: Cone Biopsy (Cervical)

I am going in for a cone biopsy next Wednesday to take care of some high grade cells on and in the opening of my cervix. It is being done in the clinic with local anesthetic. Anyone able to share their experiences during and after? Pain, ability to go back to work the next day, ability to go back to exercising (I’m training for a marathon), etc.

I’ve been told we have to avoid sex for three to four weeks afterwards! Ack! Poor husband.

I’ve had a few, and it hurts while they do it. My doctor recommended taking a few Advil beforehand. I forgot the first time and remembered the second time, and it did help. I don’t remember it hurting at all after it was over. I was able to resume life as normal–except for the sex thing, because the biopsy takes a chunk of your cervix, so it needs to heal over. I don’t think you’d want to do any heavy exercise the day of it, and maybe the next day, but after that I think it would be fine. I remember going to spin class the next day or so after my last biopsy, and it didn’t hurt at all.

YMMV, though.

My wife had it done a few years back, and in the end, it turned out fine. Clean margins, and no return of abnormal cells. Some discomfort, and of course, the no sex bit.

I took matters into my own hands during that time, but wouldn’t have minded some help.

She was nervous that it could lead to incompetent cervix during her pregnancy, but that turned out to be a non-issue as well.

To me, the pain was outside the realm of Tylenol. If you have anything a bit stronger, I’d take it.

I also had a LEEP procedure done at the same time. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it.

Possibly TMI but good info to have: I also had a blackish-rusty discharge the rest of the day. I didn’t feel good that day. The next day was better. The day after was right as rain.

I hope it all goes your way.

A colposcopy - what I had - is short of a full cone biopsy. It was also the single most painful thing I’ve gone through in my life, and I followed the doctor’s advice and took Tylenol beforehand.

But then, I didn’t have any anesthetic. However, if you (like me) have a low pain threshold, ask the doctor for a very small Vicodin prescription. Also, take a friend with you to hold your hand.

It hurt a little but it was over very quickly. The shot feels like a tight pinch. I felt nothing afterward, but did have a discharge from the stuff they swab your insides with. I took a taxi home then went to bed early. Went to work the next day and felt fine.

Really, the worst part was the fear and anticipation.

One suggestion my wife has for anyone having female surgery is to wear sweat pants to/from the hospital. You won’t want to be able to put on anything tight/uncomfortable. Dress for comfort not fashion all around. Slip on shoes, easy top.
