Please Suggest A Warm Coat Which Also Looks Good

Right now, I’m wearing a down-filled coat, c. 1970. It’s red and rather ugly. I’d like a new coat. I get cold very easily and while it’s ugly, it’s the warmest coat I currently own.

I prefer long coats to keep my legs warm. I’ve been looking at down-filled but it’s not a flattering look on me: I look short and puffy in them. I need something more “princess-style”, which makes me look taller and is more flattering to my body shape.

I’m always reluctant to spend money which could be better (and more happily) spent on books, but dammit, I’m cold. Given the fact that we’re nearing the season for spring styles to take over, I’m hoping I can find one on sale.

I apologize for the hijack in advance, but I TOTALLY read the thread title as “Please suggest a warm coat which also cooks food.”

I am going to bed.

Have you ever purchased any of them? I was kind of hoping for personal recomendations of coats that Dopers know are nice and warm.

That coat is nice but I think 100% wool coats are very heavy.

I don’t know if it’s something you’d be interested in because it’s not tailored but my mother has a fake/faux fur coat that is the extremely warm. She’s always cold so they’re perfect for her. Her coat is several years old and still looks brand new. These are pretty expensive, but here’s an example:

If you want something warm, they’re warm. You can get fur or fur lined. She got her’s at Macy’s or one of the department stores and it was on sale.

No, just trying to help. I like my bugaboo jacket but it is kind of like a ski jacket. The longest jacket I have is a sweater coat. Have you tried Target?? I’m not the kind of person to wear a long coat unless it’s a sweater coat. Sorry, I was trying to find links to places where you could look. I love VS stuff. I used to buy London Jeans from them and other stuff. Maybe another Doper will help more.

Do you have a “Sears” nearby? I recently got an amazing soft and very warm coat (soft like fur, but not fur), with a heavy hood that blocks the wind and nifty snappy things so your buttons don’t break–and I got it for $45, marked down from $180 or something similar. There were a lot of them there–I might go try to hunt one down if you have a local Sears. They had black and brown.

ETA: It looks very classy. So classy I was paranoid if I bought it people would assume I was a snob.

Well, I think that peacoats and wool-lined waxed-cotton dusters look cool and are warm. But I am a guy.

Get a cood quality trenchoat with a removable liner?

I wear a parka type so I can’t give a personal testimonial, but is this type of down coat any better-looking that the one you have? The reviews say it is quite warm and it doesn’t look too puffy.

I would also say a wool coat with a Thinsualte layer would be good.

I’m a big fan of my current coat – a wool peacoat with a hood. It reaches mid-thigh, and keeps me warm to about 5 degrees Farenheit. Anything below that, and I have to wear a cardigan/hoodie under the coat. With the right accessories, I could make it to about -35 degrees and be warm enough to make it to the car or walk a couple blocks.

Chadwick’s of Boston has several styles of long wool coats, and some of them are even on sale. Do any of those look like what you have in mind?
