Why no long down coats for men, and where can I find one?

Why does nobody seem to make really hardcore LONG down coats for men? Tom Scud has one from LL Bean that’s 10+ years old, I think, and very much showing its age - unfortunately they don’t seem to do that model anymore. (Yes, I know he could just wear a parka and long johns, but who wants to layer like that at work?) Knee length, at least, preferably longer.

Don’t men’s legs get cold, too? There are tons of options for women, but practically none for men (I did find a couple at Nordstrom, but $3600 for Gucci? That’s a big fat nope!)

I have tried all the usual suspects: Lands End, North Face, Moosejaw, Columbia, Arcteryx…everything is parka length, max, not even knee length.

Any ideas? Preferably ones that don’t cost $1k?

And why did long down coats for men apparently go out of fashion? There are a bunch of no-name ones on Amazon, but in Chicago, one wants something with trustworthy durability.

I’m a woman, and I can’t find a long coat either. There was a whole other thread recently on this subject.

How long are you looking for? I feel like coats in general have been getting shorter, but there are still a bunch of women’s options that are at least knee-length. If I were in the market, I might go for this one, even if it’s not as flattering as the one I have.

Interesting topic: we were just skiing last week and we spotted a number of men and women wearing knee length down ski jackets. We noticed because my wife was complaining her legs are always cold and she thought that might be a good solution.

After reading the post I wondered if maybe they were all old coats we’d seen, but when I do a google search for “knee length parkas” they’re definitely out there. I get lots of hits like this man’s one from Canada Goose:
https://www.canadagoose.com/us/en/shop/men/outerwear/parkas/#prefn1=length&prefv1=Knee

Which may be more than you want to spend (although they’ll last a lifetime).

FWIW - my suggestion would be to search manufacturer’s websites not retailers. Retailers only carry a subset of what each manufacturer offers. If you find a manufacturer that has one you like, contact them and ask where you can buy it.

I see there that the Canada Goose Arctic Rigger Coverall “provides ultimate cold-weather protection ideal for the harshest environments on the planet. It offers top-to-bottom coverage while providing flexibility and complete freedom of movement.” It’s $950 though. But if he actually has to work outside in Chicago in the winter…

www.antarcticsurplus.com has some down parkas for $500-950.

Thanks - he doesn’t have to work outside, but he does have a ~ 1 hour commute on public transit. I just don’t understand why he should have to spend $950 when I can spend 1/4 of that to get something analogous.

I have searched all the same manufacturer sites that I would check for myself, and more - LL Bean, Lands End, North Face, Columbia, Patagonia, Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, etc. plus outdoor retailers like Moosejaw and REI. I did find something longer at Lands End, but it’s not nearly as heavyweight as his old down one from LL Bean. The cuffs on his old one are shredded and it’s looking pretty threadbare in other places, but maybe a good tailor can come up with something…

Other than style, I don’t think you’d be getting something “analogous” for 1/4 the price. You are getting a very high quality coat in the Canada Goose. I’m not saying it’s worth 4 times as much as a cheaper one, but definitely a very high quality.

Maybe a combined birthday & Xmas gift for next year. It will give you time to look for sales.

If you do get something like that, my next advice would be to have a look at the temperature rating for the coat. They keep you warm. My daughter bought one a few years ago. She’d complain all winter about how she could never warm up. She bought the warmest one they sell and she actually finds it too warm unless it’s colder than -10C (about 14F). Anything “warmer” than that and she can only wear a light shirt, otherwise she overheats.

I was going to suggest Canada, but my info was out of date. Canada still had lots of long coats a decade or two ago, when they were long, long gone in US. Try surplus outlets for ex- police or military uniforms.

My GF was ecstatic once when she found racks and racks of below the knee coats at a mall in Manitoba in January.

I have heard good things about Canada Goose, but spending $1k for a coat seems slightly bonkers. I could do it if it were necessary, but don’t understand why it should be necessary! I was really asking why all the makers of $250 - 300 coats don’t seem to make long ones for men. Their legs get cold too!

I would like a full length mid-shin coat. I was hoping for down filled cloth rather than down filled vinyl, but at this point, I’ll take anything full length.

The last one I got was from a place that specializes in “western wear” and it has more a military look than a cowboy thing happening. Off the top of my head I would think any place heavy into “fetish wear” would be a good bet as well.

So why not wear a dark-colored women’s coat?

Nobody will notice that the zipper is reversed.

Hell, it’s hard enough to find a men’s coat that will even cover your butt without going full-on arctic parka. Most of them stop at the waist. I finally found a good, warm, waterproof butt length coat at Patagonia.

How about what I knew as a Navy bridge/peacoat? Knee-length, double-breasted, wool.

Wool just doesn’t cut it in deep Chicago winter. It just isn’t warm enough and doesn’t block wind well enough.

I used to have a long raincoat with a heavy removable liner, suitable for wearing over a business suit. But I hated getting into and out of the car wearing it, because it would bunch up on the seat. My guess is that others feel the same way, because most winter coats are only waist-length or at most butt length. Some places sell nice heavy woolen overcoats but that’s not what the OP is looking for. There are lots of long puffy coats in the women’s department, though.

You might be able to expand your search options if you search for stadium coats; I see nobody’s mentioned that in the thread so far.

Here’s one for $500.

Here’s one for under $100.

It appears that searching for “longline puffer coat” or “duvet coat” may be helpful.
