Why no long down coats for men, and where can I find one?

I actually just bought him that same coat! But it’s not down-filled and not nearly as warm as his old one.

The North Face makes a parka called McMurdo, but I think that only goes halfway to the knee. Between that and a good pair of compression socks, it might be warm enough.

Eddie Bauer stadium coat. On sale, too. A Canada Goose Expedition parka is going to be overkill unless he’ll actually be outdoors for longish periods of time, but they do sell the Warwick which would fit the bill. As to why are they so expensive? One reason is they’re made in Canada and the people making them have to make a living wage and they are very good quality.
As a side note II’ve gone through many, many cheap parkas over the years and still have my 20 year old Pendleton wool coat that looks practically new. Sometimes paying for quality is worth it.

What do you consider “long”? Down to the knees, or even longer?

I had no trouble finding a Calvin Klein knee-length men’s coat, but this was in Eugene, Oregon in the fall. From what little I know of how the clothing market works with regard to seasons, you may be out of luck right now since we are heading into spring. At least, with regard to what the actual department stores are carrying right now.

But hey, don’t despair! I once found a lined trench coat, and that was in L.A.

Shearling isn’t cheap, but a used shearling coat keeps you just as warm as a new one, and occasional steals can be had on EBay. Long lengths are definitely made. They last forever, or a significantly enough portion of forever to make no difference. Unlike down-filled puffer coats etc, they don’t rip, unless you like to wrestle in barbed wire.
I wore one on the coldest day on record in Chicago, was outside for 2 hrs straight, and was fine. Face got a little stiff though.

I’m bumping this because I scored a long coat with a down button-in liner at Goodwill today for $.99. It’s a ladies large. I’m not sure that I want it, so if anyone wants to take it off my hands for the cost of shipping, PM me. I live in Tennessee and have little use for a really warm coat, except when I feed horses. Long coats are in the way in the mud.

My wife got me a Moncler Hanoverian last Christmas and I’ve only worn it once. If you’re still looking and interested and if it’s allowed here, I’m willing to sell it to you. For reference, it’s a men’s size 2, which is equivalent to US size M.

Please ignore the last post. I just noticed your budget. Sorry.

Yeah, even if not for the budget, he needs an XL, and the winter coat season is ending. We’ll try again next year.
