Pluto's Nightmare

[Preface]: We have two dachshunds. The dogs sleep in bed with us. Since I’m larger (and warmer) than Mrs. Pluto, the dogs tend to gravitate to me during the night. If it’s cold they snuggle right up. If it’s hot, they put their stubby little legs out to keep their distance. When they do this, their little claws poke poke me in my back and annoy me.[/Preface]

Usually when I have scary dreams I find myself in some strange, grimy industrial area and I urgently have to find something or someone and I’m lost and everything keeps changing, etc. Your basic frustration dream. Once in a great while I have a scary monster dream like I did when I was a little kid. Last night I had a monster dream.

I was in a library and was sitting on a bench with two other people, whom I didn’t know. They were arguing about some occult book they had found and one was trying to make the point that if he did whatever, which he did, then a monster would appear. This being a scary dream, the monster did appear – your standard animated corpse type monster. I thought for a minute that since I didn’t have anything to do with its invocation the monster might ignore me, but no, he was no respecter of persons. He starts to grab me and I wake up.

I’m now half-awake and scared. It takes me a second to realize that I’m in my own bed and that the monster was only a dream. Just at this moment, one of the dogs, down by my feet, decides she is too close to me and pushes herself away from me. It feels just like an animated corpse hand grabbing my ankle. I get out of bed. Quickly. Very quickly.

I didn’t get much sleep for a while. It was too noisy, what with all the giggling coming from the other side of the bed.
