Need answer soonish.
I am going on a long road trip Saturday and I’m looking for some good true crime podcasts to take along.
Suggestions for other genres are allowed if you feel strongly about your suggestion.
Thanks!

This podcast about Dennis Perry is very engrossing.

And this podcast about the Gardner Museum heist is fascinating.
The best true crime podcast I’ve found is Criminal. Casefile is a close second but the older episodes are much better than the newer ones.
Ditto to this- Criminal is outstanding and unique. It’s not just a murder by numbers show- every week is a completely new way to look at all kinds of crimes, criminals, victims, lawyers, cops & all the weird different people that may have something to say about crime. A particularly good episode recently was about Roxie Laybourne, an avian/aviation forensic investigator. A job I didn’t know existed and was fascinating to hear all about it.
I also have been enjoying Kate Winkler Dawson/Paul Holes Buried Bones, which covers cold cases and/or historical murders, and Kate’s separate podcast, Tenfold More Wicked, which is more detailed series regarding the same crime each season (or at least lately, I’m not sure it started that way).
The first season of Dr. Death was excellent and horrifying.
True Crime isn’t really my thing, and it’s probably too late as you’re probably on the road by now, but as a possible change of pace / palate cleanser to all that murder and mayhem, I have several comedy podcasts I like. Especially podcasts by comedians interviewing other comedians where they get into comedy ‘inside baseball’.
Nope, not too late. On the road but have innertubes access.
Listened to Fairy Meadow from the BBC on the way down. It’s about a 3-year-old girl who went missing from an Australian beach in 1970. It drew my interest because I’ve visited the town and have been to that beach.
I’ve heard about half of Dr. Death, will finish that one.
Listened to a couple from Criminal, will listen to more.
I am very familiar with the Conan podcast. I like Mike B., did not know he had one. Not so interested in Carvey and Spade, not at all interested in most SNL folks.
Thanks for all the recs.

If you need a break from true crime, here are two that you can pick and choose from based on which topics interest you. No need to commit to a whole season if you’re just interested in penguins or rubella.
Ologies with Alie Ward is generally science based, where each episode is an interview with an expert about a single topic.
This Podcast Will Kill You is a medical podcast where each episode discusses a single disease.
A little belated, but…
MrBallen is a good one. He’s primarily a Youtuber, a former Navy SEAL who specializes in telling stories about the “strange, dark, and mysterious” - true crime, close calls with death, people winding up in places they shouldn’t be, etc. - and his Amazon podcast is a mix of remastered versions of his Youtube channel and original recordings which lean towards the true crime side of things. He’s an amazing storyteller who’d be right at home sitting in front of a campfire, sharing details about the people involved to draw you into their story and keep you hooked to find out what happens next.
Here’s a pretty good sample of his work - a story about a kidnapping in the Australian outback with a twist ending.
I agree… like the last two years really–I’m just not that interested, but older episodes were great. I especially like the multi-part episodes like the LA Bank Shoot Out episodes.
I discovered Casefile when I was searching for a podcast about Jonestown. The multi-part episode about the rise and fall of Jim Jones and The People’s Temple got me hooked on the series. And yes, the LA bank shootout series was great too.
One of my favorites is 99% Invisible. It’s ostensibly about design but it is actually very eclectic in its subject matter. You may want to test the waters with their short subject episodes.
And That’s Why We Drink is a combination true crime/paranormal podcast that I enjoy.
