My toes have as of late experience some sort of discoloration/almost fungusish type things. It’s hard to describe so let’s just say it “isn’t the way a toe is supposed to look.”
So after a few months (the problem isn’t something that really bothered me but after awhile I was like “well this isn’t going away maybe I should see if a doctor can give me an ointment or something”) I decide to deal with it. I was wondering, do I go to a podiatrist or a dermatologist?
I mean, obviously it involves my feet but it’s specifically the skin, so wouldn’t that be the dermatologist’s area of expertise?
First stop, a Pharmacist, who might know whether there is an over-the-counter anti-fungal treatment that would suit you. If not, see who they recommend.
Seriously, so much is available without prescription that you should check with your local pharmacy first. They’re used to it, don’t worry.
I’ve never been to a dermatologist. I have been to a podiatrist, with a swollen toe that turned out to be from a bacterial infection on top of fungal infection. I was amazed and impressed at how readily and accurately he diagnosed the condition, and at how rapidly the treatment took care of it.
My understanding is that some fungal infections found in feet and nails are rather tricky to deal with, and I would not expect reliable advice from a pharmacist who has only your description of the symptom to work with.
