Excuse my critisism.
When people say we’re stomping people down, making a big deal of these things and so on, I think it’s fair to point out that we’re actually not. I’ll discuss these threads with SkipMagic and Cajun Man when I have a chance.
There’s a fine line between junior modding and pointing something out for future reference. Frank’s comment, IMO, fell on the latter side of that line. Perhaps his status as a former mod swayed your opinion?
Regarding the OP, I posted in the relevant thread, but I don’t have a problem with threads like these being closed - they are pretty close to post-count padding, after all. As Marley23 says, there has long been a policy on this, and he was merely applying it consistently.
On the other hand, if the policy gets changed, no big deal either.
I’m sorry, Marley, to keep banging on about this, but I was thinking about this in the wee hours (as you do). The thing is I don’t think it, and others like it, are pointless. There’s wit, repartee and fun in them. Some of the truly great threads in the Dope have been ones that may have started off with a point, but then, for one reason or another, veer off in a surreal and highly entertaining manner. Pointless threads are ones which are dull and lifeless: ones which are pointless to read. If this thread had been allowed to grow its wings and fly, who knows where we might have gone.
NineToTheSky is right. Threads like that one provide a wonderful opportunity for clever Dopers to start riffing.
As to the contention “well, we aren’t changing the policy at all - we’ve ALWAYS closed threads like that one,” I agree. Many’s the time over the past couple of years that I’ve been disappointed to see a great opportunity for spontaneous wit dismissed.
True, no nuns died. But is the standard defense for mod actions “no nuns were immolated during this moderator action, ergo it needs no further explanation”?
I’d expect a word or two about hamster cruelty, at least.
I find closing threads about Fish to be highly offensive.
And this thread closing was extremely offensive.
