Pointless Trivia

Let’s see how much we can collect, shall we:

Iron Butterfly was the nickname of actress/singer Jeanette McDonald [and, yes, I know it was also the name of a rock band.]

Tomatoes were once considered the devils food and not eaten though the plants were kept as decorations much like we keep flowering plants today… and it was a senile old man who convinced people they wouldn’t hurt because he ate a bushel of them on the steps of a city hall… his doctor had predicted he would drop dead after the first bite.

Linwood Boomer, who was Mary’s blind husband on “Little House on the Prairie”, also produces the Fox show “Malcolm in the Middle” and it is based on his childhood.

Dogs. The word is from the Latin (remember, canine?). It was the islands of the dogs, for the wild dogs. The birds are named after the ISLANDS.

At the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, when they seal the ark in a crate and stash it in the warehouse – the number stenciled on the side of the crate is 9906763.

Truly pointless, and it’s been lodged in my head for almost twenty years, since the movie first came out…

Rats can’t vomit.

TopazAntares, that about tomatoes is not trivia, it may be UL (or to call it by its name: a lie).

About the Canaries… yup, that’s it, Islands of Dogs.

The flowers and buds of the potato plant contain some poison. Almonds also contain poison (as unca Cecil has pointed out) and a good helping can do you in.

Pigs and kangaroos have corkscrew-shaped penises. Females of these species have corresponding corkscrew-shaped genital orifices.
There are 22 stars in the Paramount movie studio logo.

The names of the two stone lions in front of the New York Public Library are Patience and Fortitude. They were named by then-mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.

Everyone is familiar with the RCA logo with Nipper the dog listening to the RCA grammaphone. But the original picture had both the dog and thegrammaphone sitting on his dead masters casket. The idea being that theclosest thing to his dead master’s voice was the RCAgrammaphone. The ad was eventually considered too morbid and they removed the casket.

Okies sailor… I haven’t had much sleep today and thats the only thing I could think of. If i think of something completely trivial I’ll stick it up.

The highest paved road in N. America goes to the top of Mt. Evans in Colorado and is 14,260ft above sea level.

There are only two MLB players who hit only one homerun before 20 and only one after 40. We are, of course, ignoring the hundreds or whatever they hit b/w ages 20 and 40. They are:

Rusty Staub
Ty Cobb

Cy Young, Warren Spahn ( think) and Greg Maddux are the only three LHP to record at least 12 straight 15-game winning seasons.

I’m not sure who the last pitcher is supposed to be, but Greg Maddux is RIGHT handed.

In this sequence:

B B
F G
J L
M Q
Q V
T _

The last letter would be “Z.”

Starting at the top, letters increase in steps of three for the left hand column and for for the right, while skipping all vowels.

Point remains that he’s won 15 or more games 12 years in a row. This year should be #13.

I saw that bit of trivia on the USA Today homepage, with no additional information. FWIW, I didn’t know DT Young was a LHP. I had thought he was a rightie.

So is a purebred Chow Chow’s (or at least it’s bluish-grayish-blackish).

Mattel originally planned a series of action figures as a marketing tie-in to the movie Conan the Barbarian. When Schwartzenegger’s movie was released with an R rating, Mattel scrapped the movie tie-in idea and gave their figure blond hair. Thus was born “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”.

On another action figure note, figures were planned for the 1979 movie Alien, and some were even prototyped. The idea was apparently abandoned because director Ridley Scott didn’t want anyone to have a clear idea of what the alien actually looked like. Pictures of the unreleased figures can be seen on the Alien DVD.
