Pokemon News: A Return to Hoenn! (Ruby and Sapphire Remakes)

Well… above average, perhaps.

My only gripe is having to come back to Mauville to switch between the Acro and Mach Bikes.

That’s really lucky. I am envious. I have seriously considered a weekend trip to New York; the Nintendo World Store at Rockefeller Plaza is Street-Passing the Eon Ticket for a few weeks.

No need to go to New York!

I got the Eon Ticket!

Hooray! Isn’t it a heck of a kick?

It’s awesome. I have completed the Hoenn Dex, and got a nice certificate for my Secret Base.

Ooh! Congratulations!

I have 5 badges, a secret base, Latias/Latios, and I’m currently lost in the Hoenn wilderness (I can’t fly yet). I’m going to try to find the next town soon. :o

Happy holidays, fellow Trainers!

I have completed the National Dex, gotten the Eon Ticket, and am breeding a Hoeen 5IV/6IV battle team.

I just got my Groudon! And my Eon Flute!

The whole sequence leading up to that scared the heck out of me. The creepy music, glaring light, etc. I don’t expect quite that atmosphere out of Pokemon. Though the place where they bury Pokemon did come pretty close. Yikes.

Flying directly on Latias/Latios is a bit disorienting, but I’m hoping I get used to it. It is pretty cool.

One badge left to go, I think!

Re: Delta Quest. Whoa! I expected Rayquaza, but not what came next. Took 6 attempts to get it, too. Stupid thing kept knocking itself out with Struggle, while repeatedly busting out of my Timer Balls. Finally snagged it with a Quick Ball.

I am currently hunting down legendaries and sending them to my National Dex in Y. I’m up to 713 out of 719 (well, 719 until the newly announced Hoopa gets released). Mew and Xerneas will be some work. I figure I can fire up My Pokemon Ranch on the Wii, deposit a ton of Bidoofs and get the Mew. For Xerneas, I may steal my older son’s copy of X. He lost interest in Pokemon at 14 and never finished the game, so I may have to finish it for him. The younger son (12) played Y like me.

I have registered for the “Battle of Hoenn,” the online battle competition that kicks off Friday at 00:00 UTC and seems to be a ladder-point type series of online battles with the only eligible Pokemon being those from the Hoenn dex.

I’m “Bricker,” there too – maybe I’ll see you.

My son, double-battle purist that he has become, is not entering. But he and I are going to the Doswell, Virginia, regional qualifier in February. I’m going to enter that one as well, but I suspect I will be quickly trounced.

I’m so excited for you!

Don’t get discouraged if you get beat; it’s cool just to be able to say you’ve played in a Pokemon tournament. Also, playing with human vs. AI trainers can teach you some strategies you might have never come up with otherwise.

I am currently at Sootopolis Gym, which I’ve been avoiding due to it looking like a huge pain in the neck. I’m going to try it again in the next couple of days (I found a guide online for each patch of ice).

I probably won’t get to it today - I have a sick kitty at home, and I’d like to keep an eye on him. :frowning:

Just FYI, for the next week or so, you can use Mystery Gift with code POKEMON497 to get a level 50 Serperior with its hidden ability Contrary. The Serperior is female; knows Leaf Storm, Hold Back, Giga drain, and Wring Out; and comes in a Cherish Ball with OT “Present.” IVs appear to be random.

And now POKEMON500 nets you Emboar, also level 50, with its hidden ability Reckless. Male, which makes me think the gender is random and I rolled a 1/8 lucky die to get a female Serperior above. Flare Blitz, Head Smash, Take Down, and Hold Back.

Hi Bricker! Thanks for the information. I got both of mine.

My Serperior (M) has Leaf Storm, Hold Back, Wring Out, and Giga Drain. Nature Adamant, Ability Contrary.

My Emboar (M) has Flare Blitz, Hold Back, Head Smash, and Take Down. Nature Bold, Ability Reckless.

I’m in the Delta Episode, and avoiding Petalburg for now (don’t want to advance the plot).

POKEMON503 is the last code, for a Samurott with Shell Armor, which protects the Samurott from critical hits.

In other news, I have been absolutely destroying the Battle Maison.

The trick? I have a Truant Durant. He knows Entrainment. For whatever bizzarre reason, the AI that controls Battle Maison is loathe to switch out Pokemon. So I lead with my Focus-Sashed Truant Durant. He hits the opposing Poke with Entrainment, and now that Pokemon is also Truant.

Then I switch in Gyrados. Gyrados doesn’t get hit on the switch-in because of Truant. On Gyrados’ first turn in battle, he Protects. Then the opponent is stuck loafing around for the next turn because of Truant, and Gyrados Dragon Dances up. Next turn, he Protects, next Dragon dance, etc. After four or five Dragon Dances, Gyrados can flatten anything with Waterfall or Earthquake. He also outspeeds anything except priority moves, so Pokemon 2 and 3, whatever they are, are quickly dispatched. I have him holding a Lum Berry, so that even if he encounters a Prankster with Will-o-Wisp, Spore, or Thunder Wave he won’t retain the status.

This obviously won’t be nearly effective in a real person battle, but for whatever reason the AI controlling the Battle Maison doesn’t recognize this as a situation where it needs to switch out.

Bricker Jr. and I are back from Doswell, Virginia, where we both participated in the Virginia Regional Championships.

I went 4-5. He was 4-3.

Lots of fun!

Heads up for anyone who still has not received an Eon Ticket via Street Pass.
This weekend the Eon Ticket will be available via the download code 2015LATIOSLATIAS.

You have through Monday, March 2 to use the code. Supposedly it will not work if you already got the Eon Ticket via Street Pass.

Also, if you use Pokebank, you can now obtain Meganium, Typhlosion, and Feraligatr, just by connecting to Pokebank. These all have their hidden ability and are all level 50. All come in plain Pokeballs.

Mine were:
Meganium (F) Solar Beam, Sunny Day, Synthesis, and Body Slam. Lonely nature. Leaf Guard ability,
Typhlosion (M) Overheat, Flamethrower, Flame Charge, Swift. Timid nature. Flash Fire ability.
Feraligatr (F) Ice Punch, Crunch, Waterfall, Screech. Gentle nature. Sheer Force ability,
Finished my Y National Dex with some help from my son for the Event-only pokemon from Sinnoh. Now I’m doing some dexnav chaining to try for a shiny Zorua. I have already gotten 3 with 3 or more perfect IVs, but still no shiny.

Woo! I finally got the game this weekend.

I only have one badge so far, but was able to transfer all of my Pokes from Soulsilver, White, and Black 2. So now my amateur guy has access to obscenely powerful Pokémon (although they can’t be controlled).

I’m trying to decide if that’s gamey to use, or should I completely the game with what I can catch and then switch over once I start building a team.

I’m trying to figure out what moves I want for battling.

I’m thinking of giving Togekiss the following:

-Tailwind
-Air Slash
-Baton Pass
-Nasty Plot

With that moveset I can set up Tailwind and Nasty Plot then pass to Porygon-Z to sweep.

The problem is 1: I’d have to breed for Nasty Plot. 2: I limit my movepool to only one attack, a flying move. But, it would allow me to give Porygon a boosted special, so I don’t waste a turn setting that up, as Porygon isn’t bulky to begin with. But, Porygon already has Nasty Plot to set himself up.

Also,

I can’t decide if I want my Volcarona to have Hurricane or Morning Sun. The latter will give me some healing, quite a bit if I have sun. But Hurricane would give me 100 accuracy if there’s rain. I plan on having Azmurill as my physical attacker. I can get him to set up rain if I go with hurricane. Or I can try to get someone to set up Sun if I go with Morning Sun.

Or stay in. Serene Grace gives Togekiss’ Air Slash a whopping 60% chance to cause a flinch. So you get STAB plus a flinch more often than not. And if this is all to pass Nasty Plot to Porygon, he can learn it himself, as you point out.

Tailwind stays in effect without Baton Pass, so drop Baton Pass for something like Heat Wave, and breed a Timid Togekiss (+Speed, -Special Attack). Invest 252 EVs in Speed and 252 in Special Attack. If you’re battling something you outspeed and against which Flying is at least neutral, you may not even want to waste a turn setting up Tailwind.

If you can give up a slot on Azumarill for Rain Dance, I like the idea of rain. Huge Power Azumarill gets a doubled Attack stat. Waterfall, a physical attack, has a base power of 80; Azumarill gets STAB as well as the doubled Attack from Huge Power and the boost from Rain Dance. So apart from the obvious advantage Hurricane Volcarona gets, Azumarill’s Waterfall in Rain will KO almost anything that doesn’t resist it. (Plus the 10% chance of flinching that Waterfall brings).

ETA: two years ago I would have consulted Bricker Jr before posting. Now, the student has become the [del]master[/del] slightly better student.

That’s a good point. If I drop Baton Pass I could instead use Thunder Wave. So not only will they get hit with flinch, they’ll have to deal with paralyze. If I do end up with Porygon I may have a free turn to set up Nasty Plot.

One thing I’m excited about is getting Azumarill Aqua Tail (I think it’s that one. It’s an Aqua something) that’ll get a priority move. So if I need to outspeed someone I can. I know some online will give him Belly Drum. It’ll take half HP but it’ll be a +6 attack on a doubled priority move.

Has it been two years already? I remember getting advice from him through you.
