Pokemon players of the world, unite!

Actually, in all seriousness, POkemon is one of my favorite RPG’s to play. They are kiddy, but probably have the deepest overall gameplay of any RPG’s I’ve ever seen. I dislike the gimmicky nature of the franchise (Hey kids, come to the special events to get X! Buy the whol series to get Y!), but there’s a lot of really interesting options and subtleties to play. I’ve never seen gameplay of this depth outside of PvP in MMORPG’s or the like.

I wish they’d develop a serious, more “adult” Pokemon game, with less emphasis on “collecting” and more on “strategy”.Perhaps where you were deliberately kept from getting very many creatures, and had to really think out how you wanted to build your team. And less worry about trying to built the “perfect” creature for a role and more active and quick battles.

Anyway, if there are any Pokemon players around, I was crious on your thoughts about Accuracy versus Power. Many players seem to refelexively favor one or the other, but it’s not clear to me which is better. Is, say, Hydro Pump worth it over Surf? (Pow 120/Acc 70 versus Pow 100/Acc 100?)

Oh, one more thing… if I had a Mudkip/Marshtomp with one Ice, Ground, and Water attack each (that takes care of almost everything there), should I finish with a Fighting attack or a defensive move like Rest, to recover HP and status?

I still really like Pokemon. Every couple of years I dust off either Yellow or Blue (I’m a traditionalist, since I was losing interest around the time the new ones were coming out - there are only 151 Pokemon. No breeding either) and play it through. It’s a great game, as long as you ignore the anime and the Card Game.

And I would love an adult version. Especially one which focuses on strategy, and penalises excessive collecting.

Accuracy pisses me off. Usually I have one hard hitting low accuracy move and one more balanced attack - your example of Hydropump and Surf fit exactly. But I only bust out Hydropump in an emergency - in a lot of cases Surf is powerful enough. Plus, if your accuracy is compromised at all, 'pump becomes pretty useless. (This assumes they haven’t tweaked the basic mechanics too much - I’ve played, I think it was Gold, maybe Silver, once, so my perspective is strictly classic.)

I don’t know Mudkip or Marshtomp, but in general I play if they are tanky they can have a defensive move, if not, then not. It’s wasting a turn if your mon has no hitpoints or defense and you try to boost it - better off getting to blows quicker, and end it quickly.

Well, there are Pokemon just for defense, and some just for weird special effects. Usually I agree with you that Growl and things aren’t very good.

Hydro Pump has been upped a little bit in Accuracy since the Days of Yore (pokemon Yellow). I’ve also been planning to get and keep Earthquake (Acc 100), so that takes care of most accuracy situations.

Mostly though, it’s a tight conflict between getting a Fighting attack and Rest. Rest is a nice one which heals you and clears status problems, although this occurs over two turns while the other guy hits you (not a good one if the enemy has a Supoer Effective attack, but otherwise good). Mostly, the Fighting Attack would give me a SUper Effective against almost everything in the game!

Two words for you: Monster Rancher.

So I’d have to buy a Sony Playstation to play it?

There’s a GBA one, several PS2 ones, a DS one, and an upcoming Wii one. So, no.

I actually like the collecting aspect of the games…I even trade with my 11 year old nephew lol And I’m definitely not a strategist. Every game I’ve played, I end up with a single pokemon at like level 100 that I do all my fighting with. In Blue it was Charizard, until I finally got Mewtwo and then it was him. Silver was Typhlosion. In Ruby it was Blaziken. Now, in Pearl, it’s Luxray.

Actually, I’d suggest this (free!) online flash card game called Kongai. It was modelled on Pokemon netbattle, which I gather is the pokemon without the collecting bit. Kongai still does feature card “collecting” in a sense (you win cards by winning games and performing challenges on the site), though.

Otherwise, if you’re a bit more tech savvy, why not try pokemon netbattle? Seems to be exactly what you’re looking for, although when I was looking it up, it seems like pokemon netbattle needs a lot more tech savvy than I though. :stuck_out_tongue:
