I’m wanting to get myself a nice, powerful Vulpix in Pokemon Sapphire. Trouble is, I don’t seem to be able to catch very good ones. Their stats seem low for level 27 Pokemon, which I attriute to their lack of training. I’d like to breed one for Fire support (get it - Fire support! I kil me sometimes).

They can learn Flail and Heat Wave, both powerful abilities. What Pokemon can I breed mine with to teach the kit those skills? I have a female Vulpix, so that’s take care of.

Secondly, my Mudkip is about to be evolved. I’ve waited until level 42 to as to get Hydro Pump. I plan to eventually have:

Protection… (To stop some fo the nastier abilities and watch what the enemy does)
Hydro Pump… (Big water damage)
Earthquake… (Big ground damage)
and either Takedown or Secret Power. Which should I drop? Takedowns a little more powerful, both are normal type, and Sercet Power doesn’t have recoil. I can buy Secret Powers from the market, of course…

Lastly, am I right in thinking that the Vulpix’s special abilities are mostly useless? Flamethrower and quick Attack are good, but Imprison and the other ability-denier aren’t helpful for me?

For Mudkip’s fourth attach, consider Return. Normal type attack, and I’m sure Mudkip’s very fond of you by now.

For fire support on my team, I use Alakazam’s Fire Punch (I also use him for Ice Punch and Lightning Punch). It takes some breeding to get one with these abilities, but seems well worth it, if only for the Battle Tower.

I would skip Flail unless the Pokemon can learn Endure. Flail does more damage when you have low HP, and when you use Endure, the opponent’s next move leaves you with at least 1 HP, so after that Flail is really powerful. Flamethrower is definitely a keeper, but Quick Attack is a bit weak for high level battling. I suggest Confuse Ray, and maybe a strong normal attack like Body Slam, and maybe Dig or something.
