I’m not aware of the level of popularity of Pokemon in Japan (while the media seems to be done with it and the movies don’t seem to make any money here, it’s still on) but you have to admit the little things are cute as all get out and making a theme park out of them isn’t so bad an idea from a marketing perspective
Working with young students here, I think that Pokemon has reached the status that Mickey Mouse has in the States – everybody knows who they are, lots of kids still buy merchandise, it’s reached a steady level of popularity without the need for continuous hype. The only difference is that there isn’t an older generation who grew up with them, buying memorabilia.
Besides, this park is just a temporary thing in conjunction with the World Expo going on in Aichi right now.
I swear, they’d better have decent pillows for Jigglypuff Land…
Speaking as a parent who’s gone on several mini-quests to find Pokemon/Pikachu merchandise for my son, I’ll just say that from my perspective, it looks like Pokemon is all but dead in the US these days. I’ve got to import stuff if I want Pokemon-banded schlock these days.
(I don’t have the heart to tell my poor kid that he’s five years behind the trend curve… everyone’s into Yu-ghi-oh now.
