What a fun film this is! Last time I watched it, it was switched off at the Lassard lectern scene by an embarrassed woman. I had chosen it to show to the recovering drug addicts over Chinese New Year, when they were allowed to watch videos. I’d forgotten all about that until we got to that scene. Memories!
The video I hired back then (1988) was definitely the cut version, as there were no gratuitous tits in that one, by the way.
But, Lordy, Lordy, the language. I’d forgotten all about that too. "There’s too many spades around here’. Don’t think they’d even try to get that past the censors these days. “Spades” - hadn’t heard that word since I was living in a working class town back in the early 80s, when, I suppose, I first saw the film.
And the gay bar! Unbelievable. I had to explain to my daughter what the joke was with Moloney sending the two sneaks there. Not sure if she fully got it, but she loved the film nonetheless.
And Tackleberry! All the bits with him were so well done, and left you wanting more. Forget the shite sequels - this is better than Airplane in my opinion.
Don’t forget “jigaboo.” I was watching the movie last year and had never heard that word before. It’s funny… I’d seen the movie many times before, but that must have been the first time I’d seen the uncensored version.
You know, I made a mental note of ‘jigaboo’ (would have gone straight over my radar if I hadn’t been using subttitles). Like you, it was a new one on me.
“When I first heard that Marge was joining the police academy, I thought it would be fun and zany, like that movie, ‘Spaceballs’. But instead it was dark and disturbing like that movie, ‘Police Academy’.”
-See you’d think growing up in that enviornment you’d be more apt to hear it.
Ohhhh snap! Just kidding.
I grew up in a small town in Montana… needless to say there were virtually no black people. I first heard “jigaboo” when I saw Spike Lee’s “School Daze” on HBO.
Yeah, the original is better than the sequels but the sequels are fun, too…at least up until #4. Don’t bother with 5, 6, or 7. Why are they even bothering to make #8without Tackleberry?
