Police - wheels turned out at traffic stops?

I’ve noticed that most of the police pulling people over around here park behind the stropped vehicle with their front wheels turned out towards the road. This is generally on highways, and it seems dangerous to me - if someone hits the police car from behind, it’s going to roll out into the traffic lanes. I see it all the time, though, so I’m wondering if it’s done for a reason.

Anyone have a clue?

It is to deflect a stray car away from the officer, to prevent roadside officer injuries that are much more likely.

The police cruiser is set up to protect the officer when out of the vehicle. The cruiser should still be parked on the side of the road, out of the flow of traffic.
