Polite Microsoft Question

Sorry, just had to post this:

Is there a way I can use my Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro joystick on my new computer?

Is there a driver for XP?

How do I plug into a new computer with no gameport?

I’m sure I’m just stupid and there’s a simple solution and that I’ll be flying over Manhattan (the city in New York State, in the virtual reality sense) in no time…

There are adaptors that will allow you to plug in a 15-pin gameport joystick into a USB port; check your favorite computer and electronics stores. XP should have native drivers for your joystick, especially since it’s a Microsoft product.

I had no idea, I’ll try that tomorrow, thanks!

According to Microsoft’s Hardware Compatibility List, the SideWinder Force Feedback Pro [GAMEPORT] only has drivers for Win2000, not XP. The adapter might be worth a shot, but be sure to keep the receipt and packaging in case it doesn’t work.

Thanks, I’m also getting a majority of opinion from other sources that it’s simply not supported. There’s certainly no way I’m cleared for takeoff tonight.

I also should have mentioned the possibility of using the port in my Creative Audigy sound card. “They” 're advising me to purchase an adapter for that port instead, every 15-pin to USB jerry-rig I’ve heard of so far has resulted in no force feedback if it worked at all.

It’s all about not throwing good money after bad, and reminding me to save receipts is a great idea, thanks again.

Firewire ports (the kind on an Audigy soundcard) are still far less common than USB. Therefore, its a much better idea to convert to USB, if you decide to go that route. Though really, its in your best interest to convert to a native USB device.

There is apparently no way that would cost less than a new force feedback joystick, the $150 Microsoft joystick is now obsolete.
