My mother worked for an Alabama Congressman when I was a baby, and Richard Nixon held me for her going up in the elevator once.
Senator Lieberman-- At a memorial day parade where I recited the pledge of alligence.
(former) Connecticut Governor Roland-- At one of my brother’s little league games. His son was in the same league. He was governor at the time.
What a great story! Any way you could post that picture, and provide a cite?
“I’m just wild about Harry…”
Just remembered a couple more. There’s a picture floating around out there of my sister and I (around 6 & 8) with Joe Clark when he was Prime Minister.
I also got a 1.5 hour interview with Ovide Mercredi when he was National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations. Really nice guy.
My spouse & I said hello to and shook hands with Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) years ago, before he actually made it to the U.S. Senate (I think he was a state senator or state rep. back then) - he was campaigning & we passed by him at the shopping mall & recognized him. Nobody else was around him, which kind of surprised me a little.
I shook hands with Gerald Ford once in a crowd. And I didn’t shoot him.
Back on a grey afternoon in 1997 I nipped out of my London office for 10 minutes to retrieve something from my nearby flat. Although it was a short walk, it involved crossing the main road between Heathrow airport and central London.
On my return a police motorbike halted next to me as I was halfway across this road and the officer yelled at me to “Wait!”. 20 seconds later a motorcade goes past, and in the back of one huge Mercedes is the Emperor Akihito of Japan, here on a state visit and en route to Buckingham Palace to see our own gracious sovereign.
As he went past, the Emperor leaned forward in his seat, gave a big grin and waved directly at me. I know he was doing it for me because, excepting the policeman, I was the only person in sight.
To my lifelong shame I just gawked back at him, looking like Cletus the yokel’s slacker-jawed younger brother. It wasn’t until he’d gone past that it occurred to me it might have been polite to at least wave back, smile, or otherwise acknowledge the attentions of one of the world’s most powerful men…

Ok, seems I am the first Euro-Doper to respond. No one except Swedes will know of these guys of course.
I used to work in parliament for a while so I have seen lots of Swedish politicians in the corridors, but I don’t count those and neither do I count the ones I’ve walked past in the street.
I have met (on several occassions) and talked a few times with Carl Bildt (both when he was prime minister and when he was just the leader of the opposition. Internationally he might be best known from his work as a peace negotiator in the Balkans.
I’ve met the current head of the Moderate party, Fredrik Reinfeld, (biggest opposition party) quite a few times over the years. From when he was just the chairman of the youth organization in Stockholm years ago to last year when he spoke at an annual meeting I attended.
I know the deputy minister of finance, Sven-Erik Österberg. He comes from the town where I have my summerhouse.
I’ve appeared on TV with Björn Rosengren, who was then the minister of Trade and Industry. I was working as a consultant back then and had just written a report for the ministry. I sat on the podium at the press conference, in case there would be any though questions about the content of the report, but there weren’t any.
Charlie Stenholm came around here quite a bit last year. My boss (the county attorney) helped him with his campaign against Neugebauer.
The highest elected Green party member, John Eder, is currently a member of the Maine House of Representatives and my cousin. As such, I’ve met him plenty of times and used to be baby-sat by him.
I haven’t heard from him in over a decade. I didn’t even know he moved to Maine. I still don’t know why.
I watched the O.J. verdict on TV in the office of Ty Fahner, former Illinois Attorney General.
Shook hands with Hubert Humphrey during a campaign stop in 1968. We were at a rally and afterwards went into a hotel to pee. HH walked through the lobby. And yes, I had washed my hands.
