poll: coke

is it just me, or does coke taste different depending on the container you drink it out of? this is how i’d rank them:

1 glass bottle is best - do they put more syrup in these? why don’t they have them around in the us anymore?

2 can

3 plastic/paper cup - think parties and all that

and

4 in a glass

i just don’t know what it is about coke, but somehow it just doesn’t taste right out of a glass! glass bottle, fine. but a glass? even if i get a can and pour it into the glass, it’s just not quite right!

any thoughts?

Longtime Coke fanatic here. Here’s my ranking:

(1) Glass bottle. God I miss them! (Although I do have a glass bottle of Mexican Coke in my fridge that I’m saving for a special occasion.) We buy the little sixpacks of 8? 10?-ounce bottles at Christmas time, and ration them out.

(2) Poured over ice in a glass. For me, this duplicates the fizziness of a glass bottle.

(3) Straight out of the can. Of course, it must be ice-cold.

(99) Plastic bottle. Yucko! This never tastes right to me. I’d rather have a freakin’ PEPSI (bleah!) than Coke in a plastic bottle.

I saw Coke bottled in glass in a Sam’s Club recently.

i like the ones in plastic bottles for some reason…but i have that reaction to the glasses…and ice! ich! then it gets all watered down…can’t stand it. so i go for the straight caffeine-addiction shot (and try to convince myself not to…)
the ones in mexico are REALLLLLY good…i’m sort of blah on sprite right now because i’ve had too much, and those, man, are really really awesome. double syrup or something.

i’ll have to check that out typhoon! thanks! :-

Huh. You know, I’ve been wondering if that was just my mind playing tricks on me. Coke in glass tastes much better than Coke in aluminium.

Concur with Scarlett’s ranking.

Scarlett, come to Atlanta! We have Coke here in the little 8 oz. curved bottles that fit yout hand perfectly, and stay cold until you finish. We have a whole refrigerator full of those bottles here at work.

I didn’t realize Coke wasn’t distributing the bottles nationwide.

My favorite is out of a can, very important, in a glass with ice. Plastic bottles suck!

I prefer it out of a bottle or glass, too, but I’m not as opposed to plastic bottles and cups as some. It’s still Coke and it still tastes great.

i like can best.

having it in a glass, i get a strange and strong chemical smell… dunno if you guys get that too…

  1. In a glass bottle.

  2. Poured in a glass

3)In a can

  1. plastic bottle - although I don’t find this to be icky, in the slightest. Of course, I drink a minimum of a 2 liter bottle of the stuff a day, so, the easiest way to do so is to have a 2 liter bottle in the fridge, and take numerous pit stops there for a hit, multiple times a day. Having it in any of the above three ways is a treat to me.

Yep, can’t stand to drink Coke right out of a plastic bottle. Leaves an icky aftertaste.
Glass bottles (still available here in Nashvile) are the best (though most expensive) way to go. The only danger is hitting your front teeth with the neck. Yeeeeow!

Damn you people! I’m not supposed to have caffeine (and therefore am supposed to avoid my beloved Coke :: wah! :: ), but all this Coke talk has ignited my passion anew. I just got back from the store and there is a 12-pack chilling in the fridge.

So if I keel over because my heart goes into defib, it’s ALL YOUR FAULT!!!*

*OK, not really. I have to drink a LOT of Coke (4-5 a day for several weeks, which is what I was doing when I was diagnosed) to have adverse effects. One 12-pack over the course of a week won’t kill me. But if it DOES . . .

:: Scarlett goes skipping off to fill the ice trays ::

ok so i have a new ranking system to put out there:

  1. Glass bottle

several notches below

  1. can
  2. small, one serving plastic bottle
  3. plastic/paper cups

and not even close to those

  1. large plastic bottle - something just tastes different, much more plasticky than the little ones, and because you usually pour it into a…
  2. frosty glass or a…
  3. frosty glass with ice

With scotch, and ice. Forget the receptacle.

This applies to all cold drinks, IMHO.
Drinking out of glass certainly affects the taste, it is far superior to plastic.

Irn Bru in Scotland is totally different from a can (horrible) than a bottle (fantastic).
Beer from a can is not good either, tasting much better poured.

Is it to do with the level of air taken in with the drink? Perhaps…

Glass bottles: num!

I don’t know about with soft drinks, but with beer drinking from a glass enhances the experience because you get to smell the barley and hops. Since taste is dependent on smell, the more generous whiff from an open glass gives a different flavor than the small opening from a bottle. There may be a similar effect with soft drinks.

Perhaps, when drinking from a plastic bottle you can actually detect some of the vinyl smell from the plastic which seems like it would negatively affect flavor.

Coke? No thanks. RC? Yeah, baby!

:ducks and runs:

Living in Mexico, I must say that even in glass bottles, there is a difference in taste. The smaller the bottle, the better the coke tastes for some reason. Maybe this has to do with different bottling plants or something, but in restaurants you usually get a small bottle, just enough for one glass. The worst is coke from a plastic cup poured from a machine (like in McDonalds). This is not even Coca Cola, its some black coloured liquid that resembles nothing.

By the way, in Mexico we have Coca Cola flavour Kool Aid. (Imagine drinking coke that has gone flat and lost most of its taste, that is what it is like. I LOVE IT, though…)
