If it is a good quality steak, no sauces. I like a good steak with onions, peppers, mushrooms and fries.
NO, never. Then again, I rarely put ketchup on anything. But even if I did, not on steak.
NY.
Nope. Not because of pretentiousness, but because it’s too sweet.
If it’s a really good cut, just salt and pepper (although the squeeze of lemon mentioned by others sounds interesting).
If it’s not that good a cut, HO sauce for dipping on the side, but not slathered all over it.
California as it says. On occasion I use ketchup. Usually I use either A-1 sauce, or lots of black pepper & garlic.
I just go with whatever seasoning is on the steak. If I throw caution to the winds, I put onions or mushrooms on it. I don’t feel the need to ruin perfectly good meat with any sort of sauce unless it’s a Swiss steak or chicken fried steak or some other non-grilled steak dish that requires sauce.

Negative. Catsup should not be used on a steak. IMO steak sauce should not be used on a steak. Au Poivre (peppered steak with a sauce made of cream, butter, shallots and brandy or cognac) is allowed.
I used to, as a kid. Now I like my steak to be either naked or dipped in a little steak sauce, or covered in a mushroom or pepper sauce, depending on the quality and my mood.
But ketchup seems odd to me now.
Sometimes…
I once made a steak sandwich out of a piece of beef my husband had prepared. White bread, American cheese, ketchup and steak.
He stood there in silence and then made the decision to keep loving me anyway; I could see the wheels turning. But it was a near thing.
No. Although good steak needs no adornment, I like eating it with peppercorns, garlic, grilled onions, HP sauce (no A-1 please), mustard or dijonnaise, chimichurri, teriyaki, etc.
Salsa criollo would be my favourite tomato sauce on steak.
Nope. Ketchup doesn’t belong on anything aside from fried potato products. The flavour completely masks everything else and what’s the point of a steak if you can’t taste it.
Only if you didn’t cook it right. A fine steak should be able to stand on its lonesome.
I’m keeping a list of any sinners that would do such a thing. Salt, fresh pepper, maybe a touch of A1, but that is all. Ketchup is way to sweet for good meat.
Ketchup on steak = blech. Now catsup…I dunno.
Anyway my brother worked in an upscale restaurant. According to him, any time a patron ordered a steak well-done, the standard response from the kitchen was to ask if they wanted a bottle of ketchup to go with it. Translation: if the person didn’t know how to order a steak then they most likely didn’t know how to eat one.
With this, I always took exception. I take my steaks very well-done without a trace of red / pink anywhere or it’s getting sent back. This being the primary reason I rarely order steak when eating out --end of mini hijack.
What is this HO sauce of which you speak?
No, no Sauce Amercain on a steak for me. Occasionally, A1… but I usually eat them plain. I sometimes might grill a pickled cherry or pepperoncini with my steak and eat that with the steak, but I’ve never eaten ketchup with a steak. Maybe I ate a chopped sirloin steak (hamburger) once with ketchup, and I like it with meatloaf…
Never, ever.
Last week at work someone mentioned having ketchup on a chicken sandwich, half of us were disgusted, “how could you have tomato sauce on chicken?” but the other half thought that it was OK. Then someone complicated things by mentioning Chicken Parmagiana. So then we started on eggs, some people have tomato sauce on all eggs, some only on fried eggs, most are disgusted by the idea of sauce on certain styles of eggs (but the style varies). It’s a great conversation starter (and finisher).
Well, I love Swiss Steak, and Huevos Rancheros, but ketchup just doesn’t taste good on a nice, savory steak to me. I guess “too sweet” is a way to describe it. I’ve tried worchestershire sauce on a bit of steak before, and it wasn’t bad, but not my preferred way of having steak. I didn’t mention lemon pepper earlier, but that’s pretty good on a steak. A bit of garlic also is good on a steak, but just a hint. I’ll have to try some good dijoun with a nice steak at some point. Sounds good!
Sometimes we make ‘grown up’ ketchup for steaks by deglazing the pan with a little wine and throwing in some fennel and tomato paste but no, no ketchup.
My son eats ketchup on everything that’s not nailed down, though.
If it’s a really cheap steak, sure. Otherwise, no; I generally eat quality steak plain.
I live in Tennessee.
I don’t really care for steak that much, and contrary to what people say no it isn’t because I’ve never had a good one. Its not that I don’t mind a nice steak now and then, but frankly I’d rather have a hamburger any day. I think Ketchup makes it taste better but it isn’t a necessity.
