I don’t eat it for breakfast but I love a pack of cinnamon instant oatmeal with a pat of butter for a snack when I’m cold.
I like instant oatmeal and instant grits. I’m not ambitious enough in the morning to do any cooking.
2 1/2 min Cream of Wheat is my favorite. With raisins and brown sugar.
Oatmeal is ok. Malt-O-Meal has an odd taste. I’ve made it before and never acquired a fondness for it.
Oatmeal (instant or regular) with brown sugar and cinnamon. Yummy! Sometimes I’ll even eat it for dinner.
For me, there could be nothing worse than starting my day with a bowl of oatmeal. I’ll spare you the never forgotten childhood memory around my “issues” with hot cereal. I’ll take fruit, egg and toast, or nothing at all for breakfast instead of oatmeal any day.
Tried poached eggs over Cap’n Crunch once. Not so much. Didn’t stay with me very long either. Milk might have been a bit off.
I like oats, frumenty, farina, maize and also sorghum porridge, which I don’t think is common outside SA. Basically any porridge is good by me.
I also use hot milk with my cornflakes and rice crispies.
Cream of Wheat. Remind me of my grandma. Very much a comfort food.
I like Quaker instant oatmeal, but I don’t eat it very often.
I never liked hot cereal. There was just something about the consistency that would induce the gag relex. When I went off to university, freshmen classes usually started at 8am and I decided that an extra 20 minutes of sleep was much better than going to breakfast. These days, I take some fruit or a granola bar to tide me until lunch.
The closest thing to what we Americans think of as hot cereal that I will eat is buckwheat kasha. I’ll eat it with a little butter or some onion fried with a little minced salo. Oatmeal, cream of wheat, and all that stuff are very unappealing to me. I don’t like the colors or the textures of any of them and I find the flavor of oats disgusting.
Hodgson Mills Oat Bran. It cooks quickly, and I like the taste.
Your mom made you finish the goddamn oatmeal, too, huh?
Malt-O-Meal is my favorite, but I can’t have it any more. Malt just seems to make things good.
And “other hot serial” is grits–both corn and rice. I wish I could find some with corn malt–I bet I could mix that with rice grits and get someting like Malt-O-Meal.
You guys think you had it bad with the oatmeal. Hah! I was born allergic to milk and had to eat oatmeal with NO MILK. Cold, congealing oatmeal with brown sugar on it, me sitting at the table trying to choke it down through my tears…GAH.
Big T, why can’t you have Malt-o-Meal?
Me too - my grandmother was white and lumpy too.
I kid, I kid. I love Cream of Wheat and oatmeal. Never cared for Malt-o-Meal or grits, but I never had either growing up. I did have Cocoa Wheats, which is sort of like chocolate-flavored lint, and which I have managed to avoid ever since.
Regards,
Shodan
I have a friend from India who has a taste for toasted Cream of Wheat. She toasts it in a dry hot pan before preparing it the usual way. Sometimes, she doesn’t even bother cooking it but just eats the dry, toasted bits. If you try it, be sure not to burn it!
Heh…when I was going through Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB–near San Antonio, Texas…grits were served with breakfast as Og intended. The yankee boys in the flight apparently thought it was cream of wheat or something equally vile, because they promptly–and before tasting–added milk and sugar to their grits, much to the amusement of the rest of us.
One vote for Cream 'o Wheat it is!
