Poll: Does "Combine" first evoke farm equipment or the NFL?

The question came up over dinner tonight, when El Perro Fumando mentioned combine in the agricultural sense, but I was thoroughly confused what her line of reasoning had to do with NFL Draft testing.

So which is it? NFL or harvesters?

(or, since I just searched for “combine” in wikipedia and came up with a number of other variations, any of those, either.)

For that particular pronunciation, I would only think of agricultural harvesters. I have heard about those my whole life and never about the NFL thing despite being a casual fan.

Farming.

Farming. Never heard of the football version. ('Cuz I don’t like football.)

Up until five years ago, it would’ve thought you pronounced a synonym for “mix” with an odd emphasis.

Since then, though, the NFL Combine would be the first thing that pops into my mind.

Farming. Even though I’m a (sub)urbanite.

I don’t know beans about American football.

Oops. Yes, emphasis on the first syllable.

yup

Farming.

I’m surprised I’m the first person here to say that the first thing it evokes for me is these guys.

Farm equipment. But then I own a farm…

Farming

farming, about yay long

COM-bine - farming.
com-BINE - cooking (mixing ingredients).
COM-bine (secondary) - economic monopolies (typically in agriculture) created by letting separate corporations operate as though they were individuals while they have really set price fixing, blackballing, and other controls to act as a monopoly.

(Is the NFL definition related to the last one? )

Ding! me too.

NFL.

But I’m a lot more sports-influenced than the “average” SDMB reader.

Farming.

I’m a casual football fan, and I’ve never heard of the NFL combine until just now.

I’m a country gal and it’s definitely a farming word.

You’d think the NFL would have created a new word instead of recycling agricultural equipment unless the concepts are similar. Does anyone know the history of the NFL using the word COMbine? Is it the same thing as a cartel?

Farming. I like NFL football, but I guess I’m also a casual fan, since I’ve never heard the NFL usage until now.

I’m a football nut, but only in the sense that I love to watch NFL football as much as possible; I don’t pay much attention to the draft and other such behind-the-scenes stuff.

So I thought of farming. Actually, I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I’d only vaguely heard of the NFL Combine before; I sort of thought it had something to do with the league’s economic status as a nonprofit corporation.
