POLL for politically astute Americans

Hello,

I have a quick question that I am wondering about for my friends to the south?

How many of you know who Carolyn Parrish is, or what she said?

Thank you.

Sorry, mate.

Let me be the first ignorant American to say…I haven’t the foggiest.

But for god sake cut us some slack! Don’t you think keeping up with bizzare and evil shite our own government is doing takes up quite a bit of our time???

It’s exhausting.

Not really sure; heard something on the radio, I think. A Canadian politician who said Americans are bastards or something. No hard feelings. Like we don’t call each other that all the time.

Damn! Not even the first. But I stand by my ignorance!

Don’t be sorry. I am just wondering if you do know her or not. This will not turn into an attack on ignorant americans or anything, its just a question (somewhat raised in another thread, one in GD) I would like to know the answer to. I welcome, and would like, all Americans who consider themselves politically astute on this board to answer. I of course know that will not happen.

Plus its odd being called mate by an American

Only heard cuz of the argument in the Canadian government thread.

I think we’re all just used to being called idiots by foreigners, even nominal allies, so why should we get ruffled anymore?

The name sounds vaguely familiar; that’s all I got.

I know who she is, only because some American conservative publications and web sites made a big deal of it for a day or two. Most Americans probably never heard about the incident.

But as others have said, MILLIONS of foreigners have undoubtedly made similar remarks. And one of the nice things about being a superpower is, we don’t even have to PRETEND we care what such imorons think.

Getting insulted by Canada? Meh.

Our Salvation Army could kick their ass.

Try to remember that this is a poll. If you want to trade childish insults, take it to The BBQ Pit.

HEY! I resemble that remark!

No clue at all.

Never heard of her.

Because you prefaced the question with “my friends to the south”, I was able to make the connection with Canada. If the question had come completely out of the blue, I would have been stumped. I still couldn’t tell you what she said–are we too materialistic, too militaristic, too religious, too arrogant, or too dumb? Honestly, it all goes in one ear and out the other. All I hear is a faint buzzing sound.

Never heard of her, doesn’t even sound familiar. But my brain automatically filters out anything that appears on a blog.

All right, just to make things a bit easier, here’s a link to wikipedia’s entry on our friend to the north, Carolyn Parrish.

She seems really annoyed with us, and based on this write up, has been for many many years. I think the point is that she expresses her opinions in a less than politically correct way, and periodically says anti-American things that prompt her colleagues to recommend an apology - which she has not/will not put forth. To be honest, my snarky comment earlier in the thread was intended to be 75% funny, 25% snarky, but misfired. In any case, I would like to tkae this opportunity to commend Ms. Parrish for standing behind the courage of her convictions. You gotta love free speech. Makes me proud that Canada fights so hard to protect her right to speak her mind like that without fear of reprisal, retaliation, or even bad press. God Bless Canada.

Never heard of her. From the thread, I assume she doesn’t like us too much. Too bad about that, Carolyn.

Thank you all taking time to answer my question.

The story on her is that she was a MP (member of Parliament, sort of like your house of representatives) who was caught on camera saying something like “Americans, I hate those Bastards”, as well as calling Bush stupid, the american electorate stupid for electing him, went on a political satire show on CBC (publicly funded network) and stuck a pin through the head of a George Bush doll, and said that would be the place it would hurt him the least. She was a member of the ruling Liberal Party at the time (but not anyone really important, just a backbencher), the Leader of said party (also our PM) Paul Martin asked her to apologize, she never did, so he kicked her out of the party, forcing her to sit as an independent. To this day she has refused to ever apologize or even attempt to make amends.

The reason I asked this question was because someone in this thread Canadian election GD thread is trying to say that Canadians have a superior attitude towards Americans, that Americans know it and don’t like it, one example of such is Parrish, and that is part of the reason for the softwood lumber dispute and refusal to take Canadian beef. I say hell no, most americans won’t have a clue who she is, that Canadians have no such attitude, and that it has nothing to do with the trade disputes.

Thank you for proving my point (even if it is with a statistically insignificant number).

To amend my answer: I remember the comments well. Had no recall at all of her name.
