A. about 5 minutes … liquid foundation, powder, mascara, and sometimes lip gloss
B. usually
C. rarely more than 10 minutes, I will include eye liner and/or shadow
D. I think guys sometimes categorized the entire getting ready process as “putting on makeup”. When I’m not in a hurry I could easily spend a half hour brushing teeth, putting in contacts, washing my face, putting on makeup, doing hair, and getting dressed. My boyfriend would definitely call all of that “putting on makeup”.
A) How long does it take to apply your usual makeup?
Fifteen minutes. Foundation (liquid or powder), cake eye liner, eye shadow, mascara, lipstick. I vary the colors of eyeshadow. Sometimes concealer if necessary.
I go totally without makeup fairly often.
B) Do you do your makeup differently for special occasions?
Yes. I will add things like blush, eyeshadow base, kohl eye pencil, and more elaborate eyeshadow.
C) If so, how long does that take?
If I’m being creative with a new look it could be up to 45 minutes, but I only do that 1-2 times per year.
D) If either A or B takes longer than 15 minutes, what accounts for that time?
I am a perfectionist. Everything has to be just so, or there is no point in wearing makeup. I think I take longer than most women because I am more careful about making sure everything is blended just right.
As for the special occasions, picking out the colors of eyeshadow and eyeliner can take awhile. I have an addiction to eye makeup and have a big collection of colors. Also, I am likely to spend more time on my foundation to make sure it is sweatproof. I have a three step mineral foundation that I tend to whip out only on those occasions, but it takes awhile to do.
A. Usual make-up: about 5 - 7 minutes, for foundation, powder, lipstick, light mascara. My gut instinct was to say 3 minutes, but I think if you count the whole thing, getting everything out, putting it on, touching up if necessary, tidying up – it could be more like 7 minutes.
B. Special occasions: yes, different. I add much more involved eye liner and eye shadow, I use a better foundation which looks great and lasts forever, but takes more time to apply evenly.
C. About 20 minutes, maybe 25 max. I can do it faster if I rush because I am late.
D) What accounts for that time … usually it’s because I am waiting for something to “set” before applying the next element, and I will do other things during that time, like put on jewelry, perfume, etc so it stretches out and it’s hard to say what is exclusively makeup time.
A) How long does it take to apply your usual makeup?
Maybe 5 minutes. That includes concealer, foundation, powder, bronzer, eyeliner, shadow, mascara, lipstick, and usually lip liner.
One of the reasons that I can do it so quickly is that I use Trish McEvoy. Her stuff fits into these modular compact thingies, so it’s not like I have to fumble around with a lot of cases. Everything except for the mascara, lipstick, and lipliner is in the case, and I have the brushes right at hand. Also, I wear the same colors every day, so there are no decisions to make.
But I should probably give it an extra minute or so and be a little more careful.
B) Do you do your makeup differently for special occasions?
For evening occasions, I might ramp up the eyeliner and shadow, and wear a darker/bolder lipstick. And for any notable occasion, I do a more thorough job with the concealer.
C) If so, how long does that take?
Maybe an extra couple of minutes.
I can’t imagine taking longer than 15 minutes to do ordinary everyday makeup! I agree with the OP–it’s hard to imagine what could take that long.
ETA: The above comment refers to “everyday makeup,” not special occasion makeup.
A) How long does it take to apply your usual makeup?
About 10 minutes. All I wear daily is liquid Cover Girl Clean Makeup, to lighten the dark circles under my eyes, even out my skin tone, and reduce the appearance of blemishes. I try to blend the edges, especially around the jawline, because I know how bad it can look otherwise.
B) Do you do your makeup differently for special occasions?
Only for very special occasions: then, I’ll break out some eyeliner (pencil), eyeshadow, and clear mascara. I don’t remember the last time I did all that, though. I haven’t bothered with any kind of lip color in years (I don’t like the taste or the mess; the last few times I put any on I wiped it off almost immediately), and I have never used blush.
C) If so, how long does that take?
An extra 10-15 minutes, because I use those things so infrequently.
A) How long does it take to apply your usual makeup? No clue. I shower, brush my teeth, get dressed, feed the cats, do my hair and put on make-up in under 30 minutes.
B) Do you do your makeup differently for special occasions? Yes. Eyeliner, different eyeshadow, and an extra coat or two of mascara.
C) If so, how long does that take? 2 minutes longer than everyday make-up. If I’m doing something fancy with my hair, it can take up to an hour. My hair is evil.
D) If either A or B takes longer than 15 minutes, what accounts for that time? Showering and hair-doing.
A) How long does it take to apply your usual makeup?
About 5-7 minutes, if you’re not counting time to apply moisturizer and my rosacea med.
(Since others are posting what they wear, I will, too. Foundation, blush, eyeshadow (usually a single, neutral-ish color), mascara, lipgloss. Occasionally a little concealer if I feel I need it.)
B) Do you do your makeup differently for special occasions?
Slightly. I’ll add eyeliner and maybe more than one color of shadow.
C) If so, how long does that take?
I dunno, another minute or two?
D) If either A or B takes longer than 15 minutes, what accounts for that time?
A) How long does it take to apply your usual makeup?
I’ll bite and say that I am a complete makeup novice. But I’ve been dealing with some hormone problems in the past 5 months that made me break out something fierce. So I try to use makeup more often than not, and it takes me at least 15 mins or more.
I use Bare Minerals makeup (because it’s the only stuff that doesn’t give me zits) which means every item is in a clunky pot that I need to open, swirl, tap and brush on. With the eye liner I do an extra step of mixing some stuff with the powdered stuff to make it liquid.
So I do moisterizer, primer, concealer, foundation, 2 eye shadows, liner, maybe bronzer, finisher, maybe mascara and lips (no liner).
And since I’m such an idiot, yes it can take up to 25 mins.
B) Do you do your makeup differently for special occasions?
No. Sometimes I don’t do bronzer or eye shadow, but I figure if I’m “in there” I just do it all.
C) If so, how long does that take?
Probably an extra 5 mins between “everything” and “bare minimum”
D) If either A or B takes longer than 15 minutes, what accounts for that time?
I’m just stupid.
So for those of you who wear makeup on a regular or semi-regular basis:
A) How long does it take to apply your usual makeup?
20/30 minutes
B) Do you do your makeup differently for special occasions?
Yes.
C) If so, how long does that take?
If I’m going out, it takes about 40 minutes.
D) If either A or B takes longer than 15 minutes, what accounts for that time?
Eyebrow maintenance
Eyelashes, curling and then making sure my mascara goes on so they look natural
Foundation, which I brush on. This takes me longer because I want to use it judiciously
Eyeliner. I wear more than most people.
The endless debate over whether I should wear blush or not
Lipstick: my lips are probably my best physical feature so I take time applying it.
I’m just really slow about it, I guess. I’m sure there are people out there who can do what I do in 10 minutes. Most of my time is taken up on the eyeliner because I am obsessive about having a very straight, clean, line.
A) How long does it take to apply your usual makeup?
For work, I wear eye shadow, eye liner and mascara, lightly applied, because my eyes disappear if I don’t. I might also wear some lip gloss. This all takes 5 minutes.
B) Do you do your makeup differently for special occasions?
Yes, I’ll wear foundation, concealer if necessary, and slightly heavier eye makeup.
**
C) If so, how long does that take?**
An additional 10 minutes.
I’ve found that men sometimes equate “time spent in bathroom without the shower running” with “time putting on makeup” so maybe that’s where the frequent accusation of women spending an hour putting on makeup comes from? (As well as women who do spend an hour doing such - I’m sure there are some.) I find I just take longer in the bathroom than the men I’ve lived around do, and I can’t quite quantify how. Except for the guys I know who style their hair - now they use up serious washroom time!
To answer the OP:
**
A) How long does it take to apply your usual makeup?**
Under two minutes, I think. I just swipe some powder on my face and brush on a bit of mascara.
B) Do you do your makeup differently for special occasions?
Yes, I wear foundation and eyeliner as well, so that takes more time.
C) If so, how long does that take?
I tell myself it’s ten minutes, but I always end up running late when I do so it clearly takes longer.
It takes me 5 minutes on a regular day (foundation and lipstick) and 10 minutes when I dress up (adding in eye shadow, blush, liner, mascara).
In other words, I’m nothing like this chick.
I wear makeup every day and it rarely takes more than 15 minutes. That’s the whole deal, foundation, powder, eyeliner, mascara, eyebrow pencil, blush, lipstick, and usually false lashes. If I decide to wear eyeshadow that adds a few minutes, but not much.
That said, I never end up getting through my makeup routine in 15 minutes because in between every step there’s breakfast to make, left over dinner dishes to do, pets to feed, work to pack up, etc.
Holy crap. I wonder if her face feels heavier after that?
Interesting tutorial, though, I might try the shadow like that–but at about 15% opacity. (If that makes sense.) In other words, like that, but not so much of it.
About 10-15 minutes, and I do a pretty comprehensive make up just about every day. Dot on, then blend concealer under the eyes. Brush on liquid foundation, then powder. Brush on eye shadow, lighter on brow, darker on lid. Brush on cream eye liner/use eye liner pencil. Put on one coat of mascara. Use brow pencil, then brow gel. Brush on blush. Use lip liner over entire lip, then put gloss/lipstick over that.
I will use more deeper/more vibrant colors for an evening out, but that really doesn’t take longer. I might apply a second coat of mascara, but that adds, like, 30 seconds.
