and in that case, i’d always value my life, and the life of the mugger, over my personal belongings, strange as it may seem.
but like jjimm said, i don’t think we’ll reach a concensus.

if a mugger/robber is willing to threaten my life for my wallet then obviously the contents of my pockets are worth more to him than my life, at that point all bets are off, if i allow this person to walk away the incident will happen again and i will feel partly responsible (plus the violence might escalate as the mugger/robber gets bolder), i feel like i am protecting my friends and family and doing the world a favor by removing this scum from society.
this person has proven to me that they are a waste of oxygen and a danger to society, i just choose not to live or die at someone else’s mercy/whim.
incidentally, i was a very artsy, hippie, pacifist kind of guy growing up until my life was threatened the first time.
i am a responsible, trained, liscensed gun owner who stores and operates his guns with a constant eye on safety, the guns are secured where the kid’s can not get to them (unloaded, in a safe)
except for one which is in a “pistol vault” that allows me fast access (it is secured by a combination lock).

ps. the most beautiful girl i have ever seen was an irish girl, she was 5 feet tall, 110 pounds, red hair, green eyes, alabaster skin and freckles (i was in love/lust instantly)
unclviny if you do that in the US you’d probably be grand. Do it here and you’ll spend a long time in prison. The people that legally have guns here (mostly shotgun) have to store them in such a way that they cannot be used for self defense. The have to be broken (two parts) and stored separately. They are for sport and sport alone.
The syringe thing isn’t an everyday happening and I can’t think of anyone off hand who got anything from one. People get mugged, houses get burgled etc but the people who get shot are generally crime gang members sitting in pubs who are shot in the back of the head or people linked to terrorists. Gun crime is rare and while the police on the street are not armed there are plenty of guns available to the police if required. We like it that way. The US is another country with a different history and culture. You do it your way and we’ll do it ours. Deal ?

Can I ask what kind of an “analysis” can be done with this kind of a survey…where the participants self select their participation?
This kind of survey is like the ones that the local news stations run …
“Call us with your opinion on the local proposed school bond referendum”…the results don’t really offer any kind of meaningful information.
I’m not criticizing your poll…I’m just questioning the notion that the results can be “analyzed”.

The obvious disclaimer is that this poll isn’t remotely scientific and not reflective of the actual spectrum of opinion in any population and proves nothing.
Still, this is a place where well-informed people meet to hammer away at the issues, so the results will be worth some discussion.
Now that I think of it, maybe we can find some links to other polls on these same issues and see how the views of Straight Dopers compare to those of the People of Darkness.
