Unlikely, but it wouldn’t be terrible if it was. Great neighborhood, good schools, great yard. Hubby likes to make improvements-sell-move up, so I know he wouldn’t be content being here longer than 10 years.
-
I do. I’d love horse property–a place where I can sip my morning coffee, look out the window, and watch my horses eating their breakfasts in the misty morning light. Someday…

We discussed and agreed that we would only buy something we would be willing to live in for the rest of our lives, and we intend to live here for the rest of our lives. Or until they “drag us out” as you so succinctly put it.

- Yes. It’s the second home we’ve owned.

- We’ll be here until our daughter no longer needs a place to stay. As such, we won’t be moving for a while, seeing as she’s not quite two years old.
- It’s a temporary home in the sense that we’ll downsize eventually, but a permanent home in that we have no future plans to move and can’t put a date on when we’ll be out. We do love this house, but it’ll be too big for just the two of us. I’d imagine we’ll probably be here for 20 years, give or take a couple, at which point I’ll be close to retirement age (I’m eligible to retire with a full pension when I’m 56). I’m not sure if we’ll wait out until I retire before we sell or if we’ll sell as soon as Josie’s moved out, which I’d hope will happen before then.

When my wife and I bought this house, we expected it to be a “starter house” until our family got too large for it. However, we were unable to have more than two kids, so the house may actually never be too small. I wouldn’t mind moving to a bigger house, but my wife is emotionaly attached to this one and there is no compelling reason to move. So I have really no expectation of whether we’ll stay here indefinitely or move at some point; could go either way.

I joked with Tom Scud right after we moved in that hallelujah, we don’t have to move again until one of us is too decrepit to make it up half a flight of stairs! For reasons outlined below, that decision may or may not stick.
-
We bought a condo rather than a house because given our desire not to have to commute by car, our price constraints, our desire not to have to bump up right against our price constraints in terms of a mortgage payment, and a complicated balancing act regarding how cruddy of a neighborhood we were willing to live in vs. how little living space we were willing to deal with, our choices were basically either buying a nice condo, or buying a crappy fixer-upper single-family house.
We opted for the former, but at some point we may get fed up with having to make all decisions regarding the building by committee (which is in itself a long story involving the bankruptcy/foreclosure of our upstairs neighbor which are still ongoing, combinedwiththe need for major roof repairs. NOT fun.). And we may build enough equity and/or save up enough cash that a single-family house becomes an option. And we may decide that we really do want our very own yard and/or garage. We shall see. But no, I really don’t think of our place as temporary; we are here for the foreseeable future.

If you think of your current owned home as temporary, do you expect to get a permanent home at some point? Only reason for another move after retirement would be to a more tax friendly location

- Yes. I also own a vacation home, and a small yacht which is classified as a third residence for tax purposes

- My primary residence, no. I have plans to build again and move in the next 2 years. I’ll probably keep my vacation residence until I kick. At some point, I’ll probably sell the boat though.
- Yeah. My next home will be my dream home, and I’ll probably kick in that one.

- I’m not sure.
- Our home is a little smaller than our dream house, especially since we’ve started a family. So we think we may move to a bigger one someday. But for now our home is adequate, so moving is just a vague idea.

Yes. Well, technically my boyfriend owns it but it’s both of ours. This is our second. We (he) owned a condo for 8 years and we hated everything about it except the not having to do yard work/shovel part. We have been in our log cabin for 13 months.

It’s hard to say. We adore this house and love the town and neighborhood. This house is everything we both always wanted (big linen closet, a pantry, a fireplace, no carpet, unique). However, if my boyfriend is offered a job he can’t refuse, we would sell. If MA/CT/RI suddenly ran out of broadcast engineer jobs, we’d have to move or he’d have to get a new job. If hell freezes over and we have more children than we can fit in our spare bedroom, we can always double the SF of the house by finishing the basement so at least we’re unlikely to grow out of it.

Kind of complicated. As long as I continue to maintain a residence in Michigan, I plan to keep the house. It’s currently been unoccupied for the last year and half, other than brief trips home. Still, it’s “home.” I don’t plan to stay there for retirement, and if things in Michigan get bad (for me), I could see myself selling and leaving. -

Yes. We bought a fixer upper rowhouse in a gentrifying neighborhood a few years ago.

4) If you do own, do you expect your current home to be where you stay until they drag you out? (Where “drag you out” includes death, serious illness, old age and having to move for work reasons when you’d much rather not).
Not really. I think in five years or so, we may want to move into a better school district, and a somewhat larger place. I should note that our place is 3 bedrooms/1.5 baths and while I would like more space, the three of us aren’t as cramped as a lot of our friends, because we aren’t packrats and I don’t mind getting rid of stuff we don’t need or use.
**5) If you think of your current owned home as temporary, do you expect to get a permanent home at some point?

I’m not sure. I can see the attraction, but I could also see downsizing to a smaller place when my son is grown up and out of the house. I don’t want to wind up like my parents in an enormous house with two people and sections of the house that don’t get regular use.
Thank you!

Stay here unless I have to move for work until some time after I retire. Then we will move to someplace cheaper - I still have lots of equity in my house. Also, I live in California, so I want to move before the big one hits. - If you think of your current owned home as temporary, do you expect to get a permanent home at some point?
Permanent - in fact we are in the middle of some renovations on it.

Probably not, though never say never. Frankly it is a little too small for my taste - to this day I’m ambivalent about the purchase. Not unhappy, just…ambivalent.
What I can say is that I’m likely here until I retire ( hopefully mid to late 50’s ).
- If you think of your current owned home as temporary, do you expect to get a permanent home at some point?
Probably. I envision at least one more place, but as it is more than a decade out at a minimum, I’m not that concerned about it.

If you do own, do you expect your current home to be where you stay until they drag you out? (Where “drag you out” includes death, serious illness, old age and having to move for work reasons when you’d much rather not).
No. When we bought this house, we purposely bought much larger than the 2 of us need, so that we could set up an apartment for my parents. Once my parents no longer need that space, we will sell this house and downsize. -
If you think of your current owned home as temporary, do you expect to get a permanent home at some point?
Probably not. Changing circumstances lead to different needs in a house. The huge house we need now won’t be the same as the house we want when it’s just 2 of us. The house we have next will probably be in a different location and configuration than we will want when mobility becomes an issue and job location no longer important.

Yes, we plan to stay here indefinitely. At some point when the kids are grown, we may move into some kind of condo situation but that’s very far off on the horizon. As far as actual houses go, this one is it.
