Poll: How many times do you wear an item of clothing before laundering it?

Assuming you wear an undershirt and don’t particularly sweat a lot, what’s wrong with wearing a shirt more than once? More than twice? I suppose three times is pushing it, but if I haven’t sweated or soiled or wrinkled a work shirt, I don’t see (or smell) any reason I can’t wear it at least a few times. My undershirts are the items that get worn once and then laundered. I hang the shirt right back up, straighten it out, and wear it again next week. Why throw it in the wash and have it fade if I don’t have to? I’ll wear a pair of good slacks four or five times before they get washed … I reckon I can go a month on four pairs.

I’m asking this question because I don’t sweat much in these colder months and I can usually tell when my clothes stink, but I hate seeing my shirts slowly fade into a state of blah so I don’t particularly see the need to do laundry as often. Am I disgusting?

Wow, no one?

Here’s mine and a bump:

Typical work attire: Jeans and a sport shirt (no undershirt). Shirt gets worn once and thrown in laundry. Jeans are worn for a week, or two pairs alternated for a week. If I throw on a tee for a night out, errands or whatever, I’ll wear it more than once before laundering (especially if it is a “memento” T-shirt (which most of mine are) so it doesn’t get worn out too quickly.

Stuff I wear around the house - sweats in winter, cut tee and lounge pants in summer - will get worn until I remember to throw them in the laundry.

Shirts once, maybe twice. Undershirts, once. Underwear & sox, once, except if it was worn for only a few hours  (you know like if it was worn to go out to dinner then taken off to go to bed, nude :stuck_out_tongue: ). Trousers three to five times if undies is worn. Anything stained once. Coats, until noticeably unfresh.

Undies and socks go into the hamper after one use.
Shirts can be re-used as long as I didn’t sweat in them.
Pants can last a lot longer, unless the fabric was quite thin and I was working out, sweating, etc.
Absolutely everything in the suitcase has to go into the laundry when I get home from a trip if I spent any time at all in a casino. The smoke, you know.

What she said. But for me, my sweat is really stinky, so I can usually only wear a shirt once before washing.

shirts, socks, underwear get worn once, bras a couple days, jeans a couple days

You will probably think of me as a slob but shirts can go for about four days. I don’t do physical labor so I don’t sweat at work. Underwear and socks go in the laundry basket everyday. Jeans can and will go two weeks and so will my shower towels, I’m drying water off of my pristine and very clean body, what is the problem?

All underwear and socks are washed after one day of wearing.

Shirts/tops/jumpers, usually once unless I feel I didn’t really sweat into them.

Trousers I will almost always wear twice unless I know I sweated in them or spilt something on them. And I’ll wear them a third day ‘round the house*’ if they’re not too bad after two.

  • as in, I’m staying home alone all day with the cat and neither she nor I care how spotless my pants are.

I asked this same question last month.

Here’s the thread.

Everything once. Shirts, socks, underwear, and jeans. Wear them and wash them.

I am with Mudshark. Once.

If I didn’t stain it somehow and I didn’t get sweaty, I’ll wear anything in my closet at least twice. Pants/jeans in particular can be worn until they’re noticeably dirty. How long that takes is up to circumstance.

Exception: socks.

Other than socks, I’ve been known to throw any type of clothing in the dryer for fifteen minutes with a dryer sheet to freshen it and remove wrinkles, vs. washing it.

Socks are different, though. Socks should be washed all day, constantly. I can’t stand dirty socks, even if I wore them for twenty minutes. Dirty socks make your shoes smell, make your feet stink, lead to athlete’s foot…I’m a freak about clean socks.

The rest of my wardrobe?

shrug

For work - fresh underwear, socks and shirt every day.

For at home alone - who cares. If someone is coming around, or I decide to go out then a shower and a change.

This vaguely relates to a story told to me by a friend who is an aged care nurse. Apparently research indicates that it is better to shower the elderly less often because they don’t sweat much and the fewer showers they have the less they risk injury.

So I am sure that soon the environmental lobby will be mocking those people who only wear clothes once before laundering. There will be TV ads encouraging you to “be a re-wearer” with slogans like “If it doesn’t smell, who can tell?”

Once.

I’m also with the once only crowd. Unless something was worn for a very short time, it will get washed before being worn again.

Do you guys not wear underwear or something? Why would you need to wash jeans after every wearing? Heck, I don’t wear underwear, and I still go at least three times in the winter, and two in the summer. Usually more. It helps that I sit at a desk all day, and change as soon as I get home into my rugby kit or gym clothes.
