Poll: % Of People You Know Who DON'T Have A Computer At Home

I’d peg it at 50% if not more. I’m the only person in the family with one. It really depends on income. I mean most people I know are just making ends meet so there isn’t much leftover to drop on a pc. I’ve had to debate whether or not to sell my own on occaision as sometimes it’s seems like a big toy.

I think my mother is the only person I know without a PC. She is not computer savvy at all, bless her lil’ heart.

I have no idea what the actual percentage is, but I know two of only two households without one. [I don’t know of how many households I know of]. The households in question consist of my Grandmother’s, [two of my aunts live with her, they’re both in their fifties, my grandmother is in her eighties), and the other is a guy I go to school with named Marcus. We’re juniors in high school, and he doesn’t have a computer. Amazing.

I have 8… do I have to average that in or are we counting pass/fail?

I have one very close and dear friend who does not own a computer nor does she know how to use one or want to learn. She much prefers letters and phone calls to keep in touch with friends.
My 82 year old grandmother does not own one YET. She is planning to get one within the next few months.

Yeah, but how does she look up movie showtimes?

Seriously, I’ve forgotten what life was like before computers. Neither my distaff grandmother-in-law or grandfather-in-law have a computer. I think those are the only people I really know for sure. My parents have two computers networked. I have three, two on a network and one work computer.

I make up for anyone else. I’ve had a computer network in my house for about eight years.

I have one but only because I’m a student: if I didn’t have essays to write I’d trash the thing and stick to the ones at the library/work. My eyes start to go funny here at the end of the day: the last thing I want to do is go home and stare at another screen!

And I have a good friend in Wales who doesn’t have one so I can’t keep in touch (‘telephone?’ ‘handwritten letters?’ what are these things?). If anyone in Chester is reading this, let me know: could you say Hi to Ed for me? Another friend in England doesn’t have one but she uses one at work.

Other than that, excluding grandparents, everyone I know has at least one.

But of course this is hardly a representative sample! Out of the crowd I knew in England (for example), almost none had computers - and they won’t likely be reading this so we’ll never hear from them. Now I hang out with students/computer geeks, so everyone has one.

I do not have a computer at home.

I’m between computers, at the moment.

AFAIK, every single person I work with has a home computer. I think there is one janitor who doesn’t, and he surfs the net using a computer in out library.

On the American side of my family, every single household of my generation (I’m in my 40s) has at least one computer. Most of my cousins got one for their kids whether they personally use it or not.

Not a single one of my aunts or uncles has a computer. They are in their 60s - 80s.

Every one of my friends has a computer. I am on my 7th xomputer.

I’d say better than 97% overall.

I do have a rather large family in Ireland, most of whiom don’t have PCz AFAIK, but I can’t say as i know them. I know OF them.

My wife’s parents are the only people I know w/out a computer and Internet access. They have a big screen TV, cable, VCR, cordless phones, cell phones, Bose soundsystem, just no computer.

Neither went to college, and they came of age before WWII. They just don’t see a need for one, although my mother in law has complained about how hard it is not to have a computer these days. It is always “log onto our website for more info”. She has said she might get one as her grandkids get older, so she can email them.

I know one. She has no good excuse.

If we’re only counting working computers, then I don’t have one at home.

And I’m going through some heavy withdrawl, let me tell you…
