Poll: Office job or music school

Music school. I strongly believe that if you are passionate about something, whether it’s music, or fixing cars, or whatever, that if you put all your energy into it, you will find a way.

You are young and unattached, yes? There won’t be a “better” time than now to do this. Do you want to be 40, thinking “Man, I’m finacially secure, but I wonder what would have happened if…” Money is NOT everything. And I say that as one who is not loaded. Your own happiness is worth a lot.

Go for it, Moe!

–tygre, who’s been there, made the “office job” decision, regretted it, and is now back on the “music school” track, and a damned sight happier too.

DeathLlama, I am envious of you that you had parents that understood. It makes things so much easier. Congrats on your demo, and may you create many more. (you may want to throw some samples on a web page for us to enjoy)

Olentzero, A very appreciative thank you for your vote and inspiring words. Best of luck with yours and Mrs. O’s future in school. I’m right where you are, about to enter a rough period in hopes of getting something new to work with. Also, stick with that violin kid! You may never be Jean-Luc Ponty, but aint playin’ fun?

Magdalene You’ve already been a wonderful inspiration to me in this thread. Inspiring you in any way would be my pleasure. Thank you.

tygre you said it man! Are you attending music school now? I’d love to hear more about it (from others as well) - instrument? year? school? jazz/classical/other? Good luck!!

I just want to give everyone who has contributed here a warm thank you {{{{{{{{everyone who has contributed here}}}}}}}}.
You guys rock!! (even those that voted against me, thank you for taking the time)

As 100% sure as I have been about my decision, whenever you make a major life decision there are doubts, subtle though they may be. My parents have done what they can to exploit these doubts (I don’t hold anything against them. I really do understand where they are coming from, and though I’ve been bitter in the past, I’m really not now at all).
But hearing all your stories and words of encouragement has done much more for me than I expected when I started this thread. I actually feel even more confident of my decision now, and am very excited (I start tues., WHOOPPEEE!!).

So thanks all, and please feel free to keep 'em coming. :)

Oh, and I’m gonna order that book right now.

I was using you deciding to go to music school as an example. The gods did not see fit to bless me with musical talent, more’s the pity.

My own “music school” vs “office job” decision was for me to go back to college and study sociology and criminal justice and give up my job as a sales rep - a job that started out fun but rapidly became a pain in the rear, though I was making decent money. I am much more content now, and look forward to each day. Life’s too short to be unhappy!

Ohhhh, I see. You meant “the music school track” metaphorically.

Well then, may you compose, in perfect time, a work that brings the melodious institutions of society into harmony with one another, while doing justice to the odd rhythms of anti-social behavior.
