Jeb! is the least crazy/stupid and, if elected, will do the country the least damage of all in that field. He is also the only one in the GOP field who has a prayer of beating Bernie Sanders, let alone Hillary Clinton.
Nah.
Jeb IS Mitt Romney, and there’s absolutely no good reason to think he’ll pick up many electoral votes Mitt didn’t.
Okay, we’ll say Jeb wins Florida- Hillary still wins comfortably.
Trump is currently leading in the polls in the real world.
If the trend continues, it means one of two things as far as I can tell. Either it means the Dems have a lock on the next election and progressives can really light the fuse on Sanders, or Idiocracy is about to take another huge leap toward being a prophesy.
Donald Trump CAN’T increase his fan base.
There is absolutely NOBODY out there who hasn’t made up his mind about Trump and may yet be won over. Nobody.
There’s a chance, however tiny, that there are people out there who don’t know much about Cruz (or Jindal or or Rubio), and who might like him if they learned more.
But Donald Trump (who, I keep telling you, is NOT running!) can’t possibly win over anybody who doesn’t already like him. If anything, people will learn that he’s flip-flopped on all the big issues, and will abandon him.
From scanning Free Republic, RedState, and other right-wing websites, a lot of folks seem to see a Trump vote as an “F-U” vote to the Republican establishment, even as they regard him as a doofus. That might be something he can cash in on electorally, at least for a little while.
Can that be interpreted as the death rattle for the Republican party? Is there a party to which sane conservative non-Democrats can switch their allegiance?
A VERY little while. Trump is a hotelier and a construction magnate, which means he’s definitely employing thousands of Mexicans with questionable paperwork. He doesn’t believe a word he’s saying about Mexicans (three years ago he was slamming Mitt Romney for not being pro-Mexican enough). He’s a BS artist, and won’t hold anyone’s loyalty long.
