Worst that happens, at some point in the future a bunch of other guys named Doors in the Air Force will join the board and find their first choice of usernames taken. Fuck those guys, you were here first. They can have Chicken of Bristol.
Yeah, keep it. I’d like to say, though, that when I first got here I didn’t know airman was a military rank and didn’t realise USAF stood for United States Air Force, so your name made absolutely no sense to me. But then again, how much sense does Duck Duck Goose make, or Coldfire, or koeeoaddi, or dorkusmalorkusmafia?
Besides, deactivation is not forever…always. My pal in Iraq was so damn deactivated that he’d been retired for years (from the Reserves) when they called him and told him to dust off the uniform and get his ass to Fort Hood because he was heading overseas!
It’s not like there is some standard here where your “title” has to be accurate anyway. Nurse Carmen isn’t and was never a nurse. Is Duke of Rat an actual duke? Did Major Kong ever actually attain the rank of major? And let’s not even start on DrMatrix and his ilk…
Of course you should stay Airman Doors! If dropping the USAF would make you feel more comfortable, then do so. Otherwise, don’t change a thing.
Keep the Airman Doors part. Drop the USAF if it’ll make you feel better.
Besides, did I change my user name when we got married? No, because I identify as MsRobyn, and as much as I love being Mrs. Airman Doors, it’d be too hard to give up my identity, as it were.
It sounds like you have a near unanimous decision here.
In first place, “keep it as is”.
In second place, “drop the USAF if it makes you uncomfortable”
I personally like it better without the “USAF”, but only because I think it’s more visually appealing. The fact that you’re being deactivated is irrelevant to me.
As others have said, you earned it so it’s yours to keep forever.
Well, with a consensus this strong, I think I know what I’m gonna do.
How does Gangrene Clitoris sound?
No, really. The name stays. Maybe I’ll take the USAF off, so as not to confuse, although that would destroy the Gomer Pyle-ness of it all. I’ll think about it. Maybe Bluesman will give me his opinion, since he and Lucretia are kinda my adopted mentors. Anyway, thank you all for the reassurance.
Oh, and Casey1505, exactly when did I become “one of the better liked and more respected posters”? That comment in particular made me blush, big time, especially since I don’t remember when I turned the corner from flaming prick to cool guy.
If memory serves, it was sometime in the spring of 2002. I’m not sure of the exact date…
I’m glad you’re sticking with your username. I’m another one who has problems keeping up with changes, and if our usernames have to be accurate, I’m in big, big trouble.
Speaking as a former crew chief(B-52D), my opinion is that you have the right to be called Airman Doors, USAF for the rest of your life. If you ever come to Portland, we can swap tales about the Marines, o.k.?
