Poll: "USA! USA!" vs "Aussie Aussie Aussie, OI OI OI!"

Do foreigners realise that the full version of the Aussie chant is ass-long?

Foreigners hell. I’m local and I don’t know it is “ass-long”. What is the full version?

I’ve always heard the German on from Octoberfest:

Tiggy Taggy Tiggy Taggy OI OI OI!!

I thought it was ‘zigi zaga zigi zaga hoi hoi hoi’.

I’d never heard the “Oi Oi Oi!” chant linked to Aussies before, until I saw someone mention it on the 'Net back in '03. Always did think it looked oddly Euro rather than Aussie.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal!

I heard it sometime before they Sidney Olympics. I thought the 'Oi’s sounded British. I’ve seen some Australian productions (watched Skippy when I was a little kid, and I like Peter Weir films), and I’d never noticed anyone saying ‘Oi’ in them. (They might have, only I never noticed.)

I love that guy! :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah. That’s kinda my experience, too. “Oi Oi Oi” I’ve always associated with Britain, especially soccer fans. Then one day I saw on a messageboard someone put up the “Aussie” bit before it – and did a “WTF?”

Doesn’t look very Aussie to me. Looks weird.

Oggi, Oggi, Oggi is Welsh? Sounds awfully Italian to me.

Well, the latter appears to be exclusive to Jews alone, so I got a problem wit dat!

The correct answer is, of course, the Tomahawk Chop.

I’ve herad it a couple of times. One that I can remember was a few years ago at a Giants game (at Candlestick). It was when Mia Hamm & Brandi Chastain & the rest of the women’s soccer team were kicking ass. I assume it was one of the finals and they flashed the soccer score on the Jumbotron between innings, and a modest USA chant got going.

The USA thing is all right when there’s a close match, but it’s obnoxious when our Yanks are way ahead. I find the “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi !” quaint and charming, even in sailing, where they often kick our Yank butts.

I’m sorta baffled by that Mexican baseball announcer’s home run call that ends up, “…no, no, no, no, no, no, noooooooo.”

Are you sure about the timing there, TLD? I left Australia just before the Olympics, and i remember being quite familiar with the chant before my departure.

And, as an Australian, i must say that i find this chant particularly annoying. While i realise that it’s rather pointless to be embarrassed by the actions of people i don’t even know, i tend to cringe whenever i hear it.

Stil, the whole “USA! USA!” thing is just as bad.

But then, i’ve never been much of a fan of unreflective nationalism anyway.

The USA one is irritating, but since I live in Australia and am subjected to the oi oi oi far too often, I’ll have to vote for it. It’s such a yobbo thing to do, and it’s replacing more specific chants - there used to be different chants used at the footy, the cricket, down the pub, now it’s all the same. And when Hungry Jacks started using it for their Aussie Burger ads I nearly went insane:

Hungry Jacks
oi oi oi
how 'bout that?
oi oi oi

Oi oi oi
Oi oi oi
Oi oi oi
Oi oi oi

…is even lamer than their usual jingles.

No, I’m not sure about it to be honest, mate. Then again, I’m not a particularly sporty person, and there seems to be a bit of a gap in my knowledge of chants from the early 80s with “C’mon Aussie!” until the “Oi! Oi!” thing, which only really came to my attention during the Olympics. It may well have been around in the 90s though. Quite happy to defer to your knowledge on this one.

I have to say this first… I HATE SPORT!

That said, I do like the chanting/singing sporting crowds. Kiwis seem to gather their strength from the Haka and then they feel they have done their lot. While I loathe the games I love watching Poms/Brit supporters, all that chanting and singing is a bloody good thing!

I can’t bring myself to say Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi (oops I just did) but it does sound good.

Fine. Take away “Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi”.

We’ll still have “You are a wanker! <clap clap clap clap clap>”. And let’s be honest, we love that one more.

In defense of the “Goooooo…ooooal!” guy, it’s not like they GET to announce a lot of points scored in that game. I figure after watching for an hour and a half, that announcer is just ITCHING to announce one!

My favorite was when an announcer started to shout it prematurely, only to watch the Goalie swat the ball aside.

Anyhow, given the choice between “USA! USA!” and “Aussie Aussie etc.”, I’m gonna lean towards USA as being slightly more annoying, though I never ever hear it anymore. Still, none of those cheers posess the superior brevity of an Aggie’s “WHOOP!”
