This may need some explaining.
In my ideal world, a politician should represent their constituents. So for example, if their constituents are vastly for abortion, that representative should act towards making abortion illegal, even if they themselves are pro-choice. The representative is doing something they themselves recognise as wrong because they feel it’s their duty to represent the public (again, ideal world here).
Here’s another example; an owner of a shop who is very anti-smoking might sell cigarettes in his shop. Maybe it’s just for the money, maybe he believes people should have the choice. Either way, he’s doing something he think is wrong (supplying cigarettes) for some important purpose.
A third example; a public defender may defend an obviously guilty person. By putting forward the best case possible, they might succeed in getting that person off. Nevertheless, because they feel each person is entitled to the best defense possible, and that all are innocent until proven guilty, they do put forth the best case.
I hope those explain what i’m getting at here. So, what do you do that you are personally against, yet still do anyway? And what’s your reasoning?
This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
In my workplace, racism is pretty rampant.
The rank pretty much goes:
Asian
Caucasian
Hispanic
African-American.
For example: say we have a job opening. If a black girl comes in, she won’t get the job. Period. No matter how much experience she has or anything. Something went missing a while ago (misplaced- it was found later) and IMMEDIATELY one of the employees’ black friends was accused of stealing it. That employee was later told not to bring her black friends to work apparently, the other friends are okay.)
We recently cut back on employees- the hispanic girl got fired, when she was a good and diligent worker and never late or absent. The asian girl who is lazy and skips constantly and spends the whole time talking on the phone to her friends stayed, as did the other white girl (who, apparently, is being fired soon becuase she skips constantly and refuses to follow the dress code)
I don’t think it’s right AT ALL to refuse to hire black employees or to base anything at all on race. The constant conversations about black people, mexican people, indian people, etc. make me uncomfortable. But I don’t know what to do about it. I love my job and I need the money. I refuse to participate in bashing any race and counteract it the best way I know how, (“that’s not true. just becuase she’s black doesn’t mean she’s a theif.” etc.) and treat all customers equally, but I sometimes feel like I’m in the mafia or something. It’s illegal to refuse to hire someone based on race (isn’t it?)
SurrenderDorothy, yes it’s illegal, and your workplace is setting itself up for a MASSIVE smackdown via some kind of lawsuit.
