I’d buy a car. The utility I find if owning a car will overtime far outweigh any trip I take.
if I already had a car… well… summer road trip with my buddies, or a trip to england.

I second (third, fourth, whatever…) the travel advice. Go see the world… or at least as much as you can on 2K.

even sven, if you’re planning to be in Bombay anytime, drop us a line… Maybe some of us can show you around. I know xash has plenty of free time these days!

Invest $1000 in at least a 1 year CD, if not stocks.Aggressive stocks. That way since you didn’t have to do anything to earn this money and it gets lost, it is of no loss to your pocket.
The other $1000 I would go somewhere where I had people I could visit and mooch off of to stretch that money as long as possible.
Are you not going to University? That $2000 should cover, what, 1/5 of your tuition?
Hi y’all,
Just as my good pal John Carter said, I’m currently holed up in a rangy old farmhouse outside Boston, rising bright and early every morning (5 am) to work on an organic farm serving low-income families and food kitchens. Americorps is keeping me busy until November, at which time it’ll repay me with $4,725 in college funds. So I’ve got a few pennies stashed aside and lots of lifetime in which to spend 'em.
As it happens, even sven, I’m applying for the International Partnership for Service-Learning program in Calcutta, India. IPSL sends young folks overseas to study at a foreign university and work with aid organizations. If accepted, I’ll spend a semester in Calcutta working with the same organizations Mother Theresa founded. If anyone’s up for IndiaDope 2005, I’ll hopefully be there.
I’ll look into finding an investment plan that’s right for me. I’m not silly enough to want to blow my entire savings, such as they are, on CDs or clothes or such. Actually, considering I’m creeping up on $3,000 and some of my teammates have $5 in their bank accounts, I think I’m not doing too bad.
IRA. Roth IRA if the tax savings aren’t much with a traditional IRA. 40 years from now, you’ll thank me.

Ignore all these squares talking about investment. You’ll have to save a bit more money for your plane fare, but once you have it, fly to east Asia. Rural China, the far reaches of Thailand, eastern Malaysia, Indonesia - or do both of the last two in Borneo. You’ll have to live like a pauper for a while, but it’s a hella comfortable place to do so. Maybe get a job in a bar to make ends meet. You’ll get a perspective on yourself and where you’re from that you simply cannot get at home. If you make local friends, you’ll find that every day brings you a new lesson about society that you would never even have thought of.
