. . . and they have never forgotten this.
If he was referring to anyone or anything other than Jesus, in my (agnostic, but knowledgable about the bible) opinion, he was committing blasphemy.
Wouldn’t whatever he was talking about, by definition, be Jesus (in his mind)?
It was not a whoosh.
Nor was I speaking of family, friends, or acquaintances, nor of dogs (though I don’t ever recall mentioning to Knowed Out or publicly that my favorite dogs are retrievers – a mysterious concidence! ;)).
There is also a bit of jumping to conclusions going on here.
I made a three-part statement, with varying degrees of certitude on my part.
-
Christ’s promise to return is not something mystical, nor the sending of the Holy Spirit, nor any of the other “What He really meant was…” speculations.
-
I think it highly probable that His return, in history, will be in a manner that matches what Skammer said – something completely unexpected that will in hindsight match the prophecies, but in ways not expected.
The reason I think this is that any observant Jew can today give you a detailed explanation of why Jesus did not meet the quite specific conclusions drawn from Tanakh as to what the Messiah would be and do. Yet every Christian sees in him the fulfillment of Messianic prophecy – but in ways no Jew of the time expected.
Today we have a similar situation to the First Century – hegemony under a conquering ruler, widespread disbelief with a humanist ethic, believers in God who emphasize legalism over lovingkindness and compassion, expecting the same sort of miraculous Messianic intervention into history as did the Jews of that time. And just as the son of the carpenter became an itinerant rabbi and ended up being executed for preaching a truth that challenged the religious-political establishment – well, le plus ce change, le plus c’est la meme chose.
- I have a hunch that I know the identity of the person who will fulfill the role in our time. It results from some things I read on his no-longer-extant website, conclusions as to his identity from what he did and did not say, and a couple of convictions which my wife or I have had as to what will be the result of his acting as he implied he would.
I did not claim that this person is the Second Coming – only that my hunch, my speculation was that he’d be the person to fill that role. I intentionally did not put a name to him, as I believe that he deserves to maintain his anonymity until he is ready to act, whenever that may be – and, as noted, his surname would identify precisely who he is to almost every American. He is himself not famous. I plan to do another post that tells virtually everything I know about him and his companion.
In his mind, maybe, but you’d have to ask him why he thinks Jesus would morph from a Jewish man into a blonde teenage boy. By orthodox Christian doctrine, it actually is blasphemy, since we believe Jesus was ressurrected 3 days after dying and has been alive ever since. So when he returns, he’s going to be the same Jewish male he was then, not a blonde teenage boy or a black lesbian or any of the other scenarios liberal Christians propose.
This gives me a visual picture of Jesus as Rabbi Krustofsky:
I can just see Jesus on the cross singing, “Oh, Mein Papa!”
So, you think you might harm or delay God’s plan somehow? Is that possibility consistant with your beliefs?
I think you are playing a game. Or believe in a very weak God.
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m dead curious. Even if I don’t agree with Poly’s hunch I’d be interested to know who has impressed him so. I just hope I can figure it out from the upcoming info.
This is getting like a cheesy 1970’s Omen style thingy.
Why did Coldfire Edit Polycarp’s post, what
cosmic secret did the multi sided fish let out by error, that needed
the oxymoronic moderator to step in to avert disaster.
A non famous person, whose second name all American’s would know. Who had a web site (but it was removed, why? who is at work suppressing the good news?)
He’s not the second coming, but He will fill that role.
mmmm Raminds me of Matrix 1
“Sorry, your not the one, Neo… maybe in another life?..”
God, I hope Peter Pan’s website is still up, else if it’s him, I’m going Hindu this instance.
Must be a less-well-known member of a prominent, or at least famous, family.
Eh, oddly enough, I find Polycarp’s post compelling. I feel like I should be posting that he’s obviously insane, but instead, I’m very curious…
Wow…I had tons of respect for Poly. I always equated religion with stupidity/fanaticism until I read some of the intelligent posts by a few of the believers around here. It made me wonder if I might have not become an Atheist if there had been people like them around where I live (it certainly would have slowed my disbelief) Now Poly is identifying the second coming through a web page.
I’m blown out of the water. Religious people are insane.
Coldfire just fixed coding… I think…
One of the gods just sprayed in my living room. No true god would do that.
As for the coming of the messiah, color me surprised.
Wow. lekatt must be thrilled about this recent development. I know I am.
For his dogged determination, a hale and hearty “huzzah” goes out to badchad, the Leslie Stahl of the Straight Dope!

Ahh… but now you know the secret origin of rain.
You can’t edit posts, buster.

Uh guys. I saw an offical warning against people putting fake edited tags on their posts in another thread…just an FYI.
Oops! That was a fake edit tag.
I had an experience like this once before. I was talking with a couple that seemed perfectly normal and intelligent. After about fifteen minutes or so, it came out that they were being followed by the Goodyear Blimp. It was spying on them, you see. They thought it might have been the CIA.
Poly, this way lies cultism. I’m not all that familiar with the new testament but I do know enough to immediately recognize that your eschatology is in tin-foil hat territory. The second coming of Jesus is supposed to be a non-stop flight from the right hand of the father. He’s not supposed to be re-born and do the whole humanity schtick again – that seems quite clear. Per the bible, the figure of the anti-christ, will, though.
I have to say that this really puts a serious hole below the waterline of your take on Christianity. It really makes it hard to take your other assertions based on your religious scholarship at all seriously.
Nonetheless, let’s have the name. None of this “I have in my hand a list” business, please. It’s a bit late to be coy. Let’s see if your extraordinary claims are matched by extraordinary evidence.
