pooping and going in circles

Why do dogs go in circles before they let a nice big steamy poop? I know the reason for spinning before going to sleep, which is to survey the area to make sure it’s safe to sleep there, but i can’t think of a reason of why dogs need to do that before dropping anchor.

Same reason, I’d imagine. Taking a dump is probably one of the times an animal is at its most vulnerable other than sleeping, so it pays to make sure nothings going to jump you from behind while you’re taking care of business. Cats are often the same way about wanting privacy before they’ll use the litter box. Note that large animals that just let it drop (like horses and cattle) don’t act nearly as concerned as those who need to squat.

Slight hijack – Boomer goes in circles too – but I’ve never seen him back up to it and scratch the ground with his hind legs after pooping, like other dogs do. He just dumps and runs. He only poops in his own yard – I wonder if he’d scratch the ground if he were allowed to poop elsewhere.

Pride in a job well done?

Now we have explained the riddle of why Boomer only poops in his own yard. In answer to your question though, no. Very unlikely.

Trampling the tall grass so it doesn’t tickle his tushie?
