Scientology is more than just weird-it’s a fucking cult.
Brooke had, I believe, put out a book about how she suffered from post partum (sp?) depression and that she sought help and took anti-depressants to help her.
Tom, for some strange reason, decided to come out of left field and say that Brooke didn’t need those drugs and that Scientology could have cured her depression with just vitamins.
When she responded he got nasty and talked about how her career was bad and that it was bad because she wasn’t a scientologist.
This is a strange story. Why is Brad Grey, the head of Paramount Pictures, not saying anything?
Better movies?
I don’t think Russell Crowe gets a free pass. He just isn’t in the media spotlight as much. Cruise seems to go out of his way to simultanously seek publicity (Oprah’s couch) and shun it. To the media, the combination is like baiting my children with suckers and then saying “no, you can’t have them.” Crowe is a nutbar (apparently), but he is a nutbar with the good sense to not send his publicist out on baiting missions with the media.
When Crowe gets the media spotlight turned on him for his nutbar behavior, we will probably send our venom his way as well. If you have a good, recent Russell Crowe story, post it…
Thing is, after throwing phones at people or whatever, Crowe seems genuinely horrified by his own behavior, is publically contrite, and appears to sincerely seek reformation up until he goes ballistic on somebody again. He at least appears to have some appreciation for the fact that he’s got a bit of an anger management problem, and the adoring public has been known to grant forgiveness to those who beg it of them.
Conversely, Tom’s on his own little planet. If he has any idea just how repellent his behavior can be, he’s not letting on, and this makes him seem even more batty than when he committed the offenses in the first place.
Actually, I see parallels between that Scientology Street Fair video and that Lauer interview. Watch 'em both.
Also, I haven’t heard any rumors of Crowe threatening Paramount because South Park made fun of him, whereas there’s tons of rumors that Cruise threatened Paramount if they aired the South Park mocking Scientology again.
I can picture it now.
Captain Kirk: Spock, I want you, Bones, Chekov, and what’s his name, the new security officer…
Spock: Ensign Cruise, sir.
Kirk: Yes, Cruise. Tell him he’s coming down to the planet with us.
