Poorly Thought-Out Abbreviations

Actually, he named his firstborn “Stephenson.” My neighbor was an immigrant from Vietnam and took the american name “Stephen.” This was also humorous to us considering his last name was King.

A health food store I used to work at made the floor staff wear name-tags with their job title on them. My buddy Dylan, who worked in produce, got promoted to assitant manager; but Produce Assistant Manager wouldn’t fit on the tag so for the rest of his time there he got to wear a nametag that proclaimed with groin-grabbing awesomeness that he was Dylan - Pro Ass Man

The standardized tests given to public school students are the Standards Of Learning. Quite appropriate, because if you fail you really are SOL.

Pun intended?

Not what came to mind for me as an American, though I’m not sure how quickly this meaning of BAPS would for others.

Don’t forget analytical chemistry, shortened to ‘anal chem’.

Took that class last semester of my senior year - and my mom still has my grade report on the fridge over 10 years later. She would say it is because it has my final cumulative GPA on it - but I don’t think that is the whole truth.

I used to work for a software company that developed accounting software. We had a POS module. For stores, you. Stop giggling.

I worked for another company that liked acronyms, so I tried to start up the DICK project. Management wouldn’t have it, so we changed it to DICE instead. Not half as much fun.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

That would be Virginia, FWIW. :smack:

Make sure you proofread to check for things may have out.

Not in my experience. Even the recent 2009 Recovery Act refers to stimulus money for LUST cleanup. See here:
http://www.epa.gov/oust/eparecovery/lustproguide.htm

Both the EPA and the Connecticut DEP still have a LUST program. I’ve never even seen the term "“leaking underground fuel tanks.” I’m so used to the LUST abbreviation that I don’t even snicker any more when I see it.

And now more scattiness.

Here in Wilmington, DE there is a program to help seniors get around using taxis.

So the taxis all proudly have “SCAT” on the side (Senior Citizen Assistance Taxi.)

Why is SCAT so popular as an acronym?

I college, I took a non-credit class that was offered by one of the residential colleges at my university. The name of the college was Lovett College, and on our transcripts, the departments offering the classes were abbreviated with four-letter codes.

So, on my official transcript, along with all of my chemical engineering classes, is this class:

LOVE 101

(I got an A.)

I don’t get it… what bad/amusing/inappropriate things does CBT usually stand for?

Is the abbreviation ‘BM’ known outside of medical circles? I had never heard of it until I worked for a medical clinic.

I don’t get it either.

I don’t know that I’d call it popular exactly, but it’s known well enough. At least, well enough that seeing things like BM Coffee elicits easy giggles.

Cock and Ball Torture - the subset of BDSM dedicated to intense stimulation of male genitalia. When I found out that it also stood for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, a lot of things made a lot more sense.

A husband and wife team (friends of mine) decided to use their initials in the web address of their startup company. He’s D, she’s A, they’re both Crookes.

Would you put your credit card info into dacrookes.com?

Oooooooooooh.

Ummm… thanks. I’ll never be able to look at my Cognitive Behavioural Therapy workbooks without snerking.

(I have to wonder, though… which one has first dibs on the acronym?)

I was going to ask what this meant, but I think I figured it out.

I’m guessing this is a common acronym that everyone knows but me?

SOOL might be more easily recognizable, but usually the word “of” doesn’t make it into acronyms - if that helps you identify it.

Jimmy Eat World always amuses me even though it isn’t really poorly thought out as much as simply droll.
